‘This Indian player can destroy my world record’

Brian Lara has played an unbeaten inning of 400 runs in Test. Lara feels that this Indian player can break his record

New Delhi. Indian cricket team’s young opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal has confirmed his place in Team India’s Test team in a very short time. Yashasvi has scored 2 double centuries in his short Test career. He currently has the experience of playing only 9 Test matches. Windies legend Brian Lara is also an admirer of Yashasvi’s brilliant batting. Lara says that if there is anyone who can come close to his achievements including his record unbeaten 400 runs, then it is Team India’s 22-year-old left hand batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Brian Lara did not suddenly praise Yashasvi Jaiswal highly. These two left-handed batsmen share a special bond. They spent a lot of time together during the IPL last year after the ‘four o’clock in the morning conversation’. Then Lara was coaching Sunrisers Hyderabad and young opening batsman Jaiswal was with Rajasthan Royals. A lot has changed since IPL 2023 and Jaiswal has now become an important part of India’s Test and T20 team. He has performed brilliantly in the longest format. His average is close to 70 and he has scored three centuries, including two double centuries, in the recent home series against England. What has impressed Lara is Jaiswal’s ability to change the game according to the match situation.

‘Jaiswal has a very good chance to do this’
In a conversation organized by ‘Star Sports’, Lara told PTI’s editors at its headquarters, ‘If I feel that my record is under threat, Jaiswal has a very good chance to do so. He has the potential, has already scored two double centuries. He is so good. Lara, who recently turned 55, is one of the game’s all-time greats, having scored nearly 12,000 runs in Tests and more than 10,000 runs in ODIs. His record of highest individual score of 400 not out against England in 2004 still stands.

‘I am available to help everyone’
When Lara was asked about the light-hearted moment they shared during the match between Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers in the current season, he recalled his first meeting with Jaiswal. Lara said, ‘The only thing I can say about that (conversation) is that I think he is an excellent young cricketer. What I like about him is that he is very humble and willing to work. When I met him for the first time (last year) I immediately felt connected to him. After the match (Sunrisers vs Royals), I went to the hotel with a friend of mine from the Caribbean who knew Jos Buttler. It was midnight and Jaiswal found me. I left the hotel at four in the morning. He just wanted to hear more and more. This is one of its wonderful qualities. His ability to learn as much as possible. Our conversation was about trying to make him a better cricketer. I am available to anyone who has my number. I am happy to talk cricket.

Lara’s world record has not been broken for 20 years
Lara’s record of unbeaten 400 runs has not been broken for 20 years and he said that he is still ready to see the day when his record will be broken. He said, ‘I think the pace at which these guys (Yashaswi Jaiswal and Abhishek Sharma) are batting now makes the difference. You look at the people over the years who have challenged scores of over 300. He is Chris Gayle. He is Virender Sehwag. He is Sanath Jayasuriya, he is Inzamam ul Haq. He is Matthew Hayden. These are the people who destroy bowling attacks. In the present case you would not say the same for Rahul Dravid or Steve Smith. But a player who likes to score runs quickly will have a chance, you know, Jaiswal, I mean I was in Australia when David Warner came around and you know he is an aggressive player.
