IPL Auction 2025: I called Iyer but… he/she is captaincy material, reveals Ponting

New Delhi. Punjab Kings have almost decided their captain by making the biggest bid in IPL history on Shreyas Iyer. Shreyas Iyer made Kolkata Knight Riders champion as captain in IPL 2024. Punjab Kings coach Ricky Ponting has indicated that Shreyas Iyer can be the coach of the team. IPL auction started on Sunday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. IPL auction will continue on Monday also.

Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting said, ‘I have not talked to Shreyas Iyer about captaincy yet. I called him/her before the IPL auction, but he/she did not receive. he/she has been a successful captain in IPL. I have worked with him/her in Delhi Capitals for three-four years.

Australia’s Ricky Ponting told Cricinfo, ‘he/she (Shreyas Iyer) was the winning captain of the tournament last year. I am excited to work with him/her again. If he/she is ready to take the responsibility (captaincy) in IPL for us, we will be very happy. Punjab Kings included Arshdeep Singh in their team through RTM card for Rs 18 crore.

Record of most expensive player broken in 15 minutes
Let us tell you that in IPL Auction 2025, Punjab Kings included Shreyas Iyer in their team by bidding Rs 26.75 crore. When this bid was made, it was the biggest bid in IPL history. However, Iyer’s record of being the most expensive player was broken after about 15 minutes. Lucknow Supergiants made a record bid of Rs 27 crore on Rishabh Pant.
