In a shocking incident from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, a 19-year-old girl was allegedly gangraped by 23 men over a period of six days in different parts of the city.
The police have arrested nine accused so far. A case has been filed against 23 persons in total — 12 named and 11 unidentified.
Arrests Made
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Varuna Zone) Chandra Kant Meena confirmed the arrests. He said more people are likely involved and police are working to identify and catch them.
Those arrested include:
- Raj Vishwakarma (20)
- Danish Ali (20)
- Imran Ahmad (19)
- Shabbir Alam alias Sameer Ahmad (21)
- Ayush Dhusia (19)
- Sajid (19)
- Suhail Sheikh (20)
- Sohail Khan (20)
- Anmol Gupta (28)
Six of these men were detained by police last Sunday. All the arrested were presented before court on Tuesday night and then sent to jail.
What Happened
According to the victim’s mother, the incident began on March 29. The girl was returning home from a friend’s place when she met Raj Vishwakarma.
He allegedly took her to a café, where he raped her overnight. The next day, Sameer (alias Shabbir Alam) took her to another location and also sexually assaulted her. He later left her in the Nadesar area.
Over the next several days, more men assaulted the girl at different places in the city. The girl was allegedly drugged before being attacked, multiple times.
Victim’s Return and Complaint
The girl somehow managed to reach home on April 4. She then told her mother about the entire incident. A police case was immediately filed.
Investigation Ongoing
Police are now working to track down the remaining accused. The case has caused shock and anger across the city.
