Washington, USA: Former U.S. President Donald Trump has raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 125%, a significant jump from the earlier 104%. This move was announced through his social media platform, Truth Social. While China faces this harsh increase, Trump has paused similar tariffs on 75 other countries for 90 days.
China Faces Strong Punishment
Trump said China showed a “lack of respect” for global markets. Because of this, he ordered an immediate increase in tariffs on all Chinese imports. He accused China of unfair trade practices, manipulating currency, and giving unjust subsidies to its industries.
“The days of ripping off the USA are over,” Trump wrote.
He blamed China for damaging the U.S. economy for decades and said that this new tariff rate would send a strong message.
Other Countries Get Temporary Relief
While China was targeted heavily, Trump showed a more friendly approach to other nations. He said that over 75 countries had contacted U.S. trade officials and were willing to talk and fix trade issues.
These nations did not retaliate against the U.S., Trump noted.
Because of this positive response, Trump announced a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs for these countries. During this period, a lower tariff rate of 10% will apply instead of the earlier rates.
Changing the Global Trade Landscape
This shift in strategy seems like an effort to isolate China, while bringing other countries closer to the U.S. Trump’s earlier decision to impose widespread tariffs had upset many American allies. But this latest announcement seems to fix some of that damage.
Many believe that Trump’s move is aimed at improving his image and rebuilding trust with global partners.
Impact on Stock Market
Within minutes of the announcement, U.S. stock markets responded positively. The S&P 500 jumped 6%, ending a week-long slump that began after Trump’s earlier “Liberation Day” tariff news.
What This Means Going Forward
With China now singled out, other countries might reconsider their trade ties. While China had gained some support recently, this new development could pull nations back towards the U.S..
President Trump’s action sends a clear message: China is the main target, and the U.S. is ready to protect its economy at any cost.
