Trophy captured after 27 years, tradition of playing ‘Khadoos’ cricket continues


New Delhi. Mumbai captured the Irani Cup despite drawing the match against Rest of India. Mumbai captured this trophy after 27 years on the basis of lead in the first innings. Ajinkya Rahane and Company won the Irani Cup for the 15th time overall. Happy to end the team’s title drought, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has decided to honor its players by organizing a function in Mumbai. The reigning Ranji Trophy champions won the Irani Cup for the first time since 1997-98 with a lead of 121 runs in the first innings against Rest of India.

MCA President Ajinkya Naik told PTI on Saturday that the ceremony will be held at Wankhede Stadium. This will include board officials, Apex Council members, grounds and club representatives as well as members of the Cricket Reform Committee. Naik said in a statement, ‘Mumbai once again set an excellent example of patience and passion. The boys performed brilliantly throughout the five days and maintained the tradition of playing ‘Khadoos’ cricket. he/she said, ‘It was a perfect display of ‘team work’. In which every player played his/her role brilliantly. After last year’s Ranji Trophy win, this Irani Cup win further adds to our achievements.’

Sarfaraz Khan scored unbeaten 222 runs in the first innings
Indian batsman Sarfaraz Khan played an important role in giving Mumbai a big lead by scoring unbeaten 222 runs in the first innings. So in the second inning, Tanush Kotian took the match away from the rest of India with an inning of 114 runs. For Rest of India, opening batsman Abhimanyu Easwaran had scored 191 runs in the first innings. Mumbai started the final day at 153 runs for six wickets and declared the second innings at 329 runs for eight wickets. In this way Mumbai’s total lead became 450 runs.

It was impossible to chase the target of 451 runs in less than a season
Chasing the target of 451 runs in less than a session was impossible, leading to Rest of India captain Ruturaj Gaikwad joining hands with his/her rival Ajinkya Rahane for a draw. In this way, defending Ranji Trophy champion Mumbai won the match.
