This is a direct slap on the system… ED reached Supreme Court citing Kejriwal’s speech, what did the court say?

New Delhi: The ED on Thursday moved the Supreme Court over Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s election speech. The ED referred to his statement in the Supreme Court in which he had asked people to vote for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) if they did not want to go to jail again. Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta, representing the ED, told a bench headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna that such a statement was a direct ‘slap on the system’. The bench also included Justice Dipankar Dutta. SG Mehta referred to CM Kejriwal’s speech in which the AAP supremo had said that if people vote for the ‘broom’ election symbol, they will not have to go to jail. Mehta said, ‘Kejriwal says, ‘If you vote for me, I will not have to go to jail on June 2.’ How can this be possible?’ The bench said, ‘Our order is very clear. We have fixed the timeline i.e. the dates of release and surrender. We are not giving any relaxation to anyone. SG Mehta said, ‘He should not have said this. This is a slap on the system and I object to it.

In response, CM Kejriwal’s lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that many senior ministers of the Center have given various statements against his client. The Supreme Court asked the parties concerned to confine themselves to legal questions and began hearing the case. It is noteworthy that in an order last week, the Supreme Court had ordered the release of CM Kejriwal on interim bail till June 1 on liquor scam charges and asked him to surrender on June 2.
