Some are fast in scoring runs, some are ‘miserly’ and some…, ‘elderly’ cricketers shine in T20 WC

New Delhi. There is a general belief that T20 cricket suits energetic young players more. The reason for this is that this format is played at a very fast pace, which requires tremendous fitness and reflexes for running between the wickets and fielding. To some extent this is true, but older players with sports skills have also achieved success in this format. In the group matches of T20 World Cup 2024, some older players have also managed to shine amid the strong performances of youngsters like Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Nicholas Pooran, Fazalhaq Farooqui, Arshdeep Singh and Tanjim Hasan Shakib.

Many of these ‘elderly’ players will also be seen playing in the Super 8 round of the tournament. The older players who have made a special impact with their game in the current World Cup include Australia’s David Warner, New Zealand’s Tim Southee, Scotland’s Tim Barrington, West Indies’ Andre Russell and Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan. Out of these, the teams of Warner, Shakib and Russell have made it to the last eight.

Warner has the highest strike rate in the innings
37-year-old David Warner is playing for the last time in the T20 World Cup 2024. Left-handed batsman Warner keeps the scoreboard moving by playing aggressive shots. he/she has the highest strike rate in an innings in the current tournament. In the group match against England, Warner played a blistering innings of 39 runs (strike rate 243.75) in just 16 balls with the help of two fours and four sixes. This is the highest strike rate of an innings of this edition. Saudi’s economy is the best in bowling

If Warner is effective in batting, then in bowling, New Zealand’s Tim Southee made an impression by bowling the most economical in the group matches. Unfortunately, Southee will not be seen in the further matches of the tournament because the Kiwi team could not reach the Super 8. In the three matches of the group stage, Southee took 7 wickets for 36 runs in his/her quota of 12 overs, keeping one maiden. his/her strike rate was 3.00. Southee was not part of the playing XI in the initial match of the New Zealand team against Afghanistan. New Zealand’s Indian-origin player Rachin Ravindra also has a strike rate of 3.00 like Southee, but he/she has bowled only 3 overs in three matches. Rachin took two wickets for 9 runs in three overs.

Berrington is second in batting average
In this group of aging players, Scotland’s Richie Berrington’s batting did not receive much praise but his/her contribution has also not been less. The reason for this was Scotland not being a full member of the ICC and its cricket not getting much attention. 37-year-old Berrington scored 102 runs (average 102.00) in three innings of 4 matches, remaining unbeaten twice. In terms of batting average in the group round, Berrington was second after America’s Aaron Jones (141.00). In 18 matches of four T20 World Cups, Berrington has scored 389 runs at an average of 32.41. The Scotland team could not make it to the Super.
