Sandeep Patil has written, ‘The trend of hiring foreign coaches and support staff started in India after 2000. This brought great benefits, because India’s foreign record has continuously improved. It all started with John Wright becoming India’s first foreign coach. he/she has written, ‘I think John was the ideal coach for India. he/she was soft-spoken, polite and well-mannered. Always kept to himself and was happy living under the shadow of Sourav Ganguly. he/she was rarely in the news. Greg Chappell was the opposite. he/she was in the news every day.

Sandeep Patil believes that for John Wright, every player was equal and for him/her the team was paramount. he/she has written in his/her book, ‘During Wright’s tenure there was no such thing as senior or junior. This was a team. he/she believed that all senior players are leaders in some way or the other. he/she respected him/her and gave him/her free rein.
