Now water will not be wasted in monsoon, know the government’s plan of 10 lakh sites

New Delhi: The central government is going to take a new initiative to increase the groundwater level across the country before the next monsoon. One crore water harvesting sites will be constructed in this. There are preparations to collect rain water in these sites. This will include check dams, percolation tanks and recharge wells. This new initiative, ‘Jal Sanchay, Jan Bhagidari’, will further strengthen the ‘Catch the Rain – Where it Falls When it Falls’ campaign launched in 2019.

What is the government’s plan?

A Jal Shakti Ministry official said it is a community-led initiative aimed at securing rain water through harvesting, borewell recharge and recharge shafts. For this, necessary help will be taken from government and non-government resources like CSR funds, industrial houses, civic bodies and people working in the water sector. They are collectively working towards ensuring a water secure future.

‘Water conservation, public participation’

The official said the main objective of the ‘Jal Sanchay, Jan Bhagidari’ (JSJB) initiative is to ensure that every drop of water is conserved through collective efforts following the approach of the whole society and the whole government. After the initial success of this initiative in Gujarat, it was decided to build one million such structures across India. JSJB was launched in Surat last month.

How to save rain water

Under this initiative, each district has been tasked to ensure that all villages have at least five recharge sites to collect and store rain water. Further, each municipal corporation has been requested to install a minimum of 10,000 recharge structures in its jurisdiction. A special event was organized in Surat on Sunday to showcase the potential of such initiatives.

Expectations from Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar government

Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel are expected to commit to building 80,000 rainwater harvesting structures across the state before next year’s monsoon. The governments of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar are also expected to announce similar commitments. It will further strengthen the ‘Catch the Rain – Where it Falls’ campaign launched in 2019 in 1,592 blocks of 256 water-stressed districts of the country.
