Canada has sometimes been discussed about changes in its strict immigration policy and sometimes about changes in the ‘Post-Graduation Work Permit’ (PGWP) program. Not only this, but recently it also stopped the ‘Student Direct Stream’ i.e. SDS scheme to control the number of foreign students.
However, amidst the bad news coming from Canada, a good news has also come for Indians. Foreign students, including Indians, going to study in Canada will now be allowed to work part-time jobs for more hours every week. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has said it will allow foreign students to work outside their college campuses without a work permit for 24 hours every week. Till now, foreign students could only work for 20 hours outside the campus without a work permit.

Announcing the decision, IRCC Minister Mark Miller stressed that the new rule has been introduced so that students can focus on their studies while gaining Canadian work experience. Indians are going to get the direct benefit of increase in working hours. They can now increase their earnings by working longer hours. If you are a student studying in Canada and want to earn money by doing part time job in your free time, then you should keep in mind some things suggested by IRCC. According to IRCC, the student and his/her employer, i.e. the company, have to ensure that the student can work without a work permit before he/she is employed permanently. Students may have to leave Canada if they take up a job off campus without following the rules. Students can start part time job only when their studies have also started.

How to check eligibility for off campus job?

If you want to do a job outside the campus, then first of all you should know the eligibility criteria. You should know very well whether you follow the working conditions or not. Let us know the eligibility criteria required for doing off-campus job.

  • Student must be a full-time student in a ‘Designated Learning Institution’ (DLI).
  • The student should either be studying in a college-university or be a part of a vocational or professional training program.
  • The student’s course should be a study lasting at least six months, at the end of which he/she/she gets a degree, diploma or certificate.
  • The student has started studying.
  • The student must have his/her or her own Social Insurance Number (SIN).

Who is not eligible for off campus job?

  • The student whose study permit states that he/she has not been allowed to work off-campus.
  • Students who are studying only in an English or French as a Second Language (ESL/FSL) program.
  • Students who are studying general interest courses like Travel and Tourism Management.

If they want, they can work 24 hours by doing two jobs, but the working hours of both the jobs together should not exceed 24 hours.
