Maldives, which is on the verge of bankruptcy, now trusts India, Muizzu did this work before coming to Delhi

New Delhi: This month, Maldives President Mohammad Muizzu is coming to India on his/her first official visit. Before this, some misunderstandings between India and Maldives have been resolved. India has withdrawn its troops from Maldives. This has improved the relations between the two countries.India-Maldives relations are better than before
Relations between India and Maldives have improved. India has withdrawn its military personnel. These soldiers used to operate the relief helicopters and aircraft of the Government of India. Now civilian employees are working in their place. This has resumed high-level visits between the two countries. Muizzu had insisted on withdrawing his/her troops from India. he/she had said that he/she would not allow any country to interfere or undermine the sovereignty of Maldives.

What is China’s role in the relations between the two countries?
However, the closeness in relations between India and Maldives has not come at the cost of distancing itself from China. This is clear from the agreement made last week to promote trade and investment relations with Beijing. Apart from this, talks are also going on to strengthen defense cooperation between the two countries.

‘Remove misunderstanding with India’
On a visit to Sri Lanka, Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer spoke about his/her country’s relations with India and China. he/she acknowledged that there had been challenges in relations with India after Muizzu’s attempts to send back Indian troops. “At the beginning of our government, we had some bitter-sweet experiences (with India), you know,” a Maldivian newspaper quoted Zameer as saying. he/she said these misunderstandings have been cleared after the withdrawal of Indian troops. Interestingly, on the same day that Muizzu’s office announced the India visit, Maldivian media also reported that two ministers who made derogatory comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year have resigned from the government.

“We have good relations with both China and India and both countries continue to support the Maldives,” Zameer said. he/she thanked both countries for their support at a time when international credit agencies were warning about the country’s economic situation.

What did Maldives say on the economic situation?Zameer said the Maldives has no plans to seek IMF help. he/she dismissed the current economic challenges facing his/her country as temporary. “We have bilateral partners who are very sensitive to our needs and our situation. I don’t think this is a time where we will engage with the IMF right now. The problem we are facing is very temporary because our reserves have declined currently,” he/she said.
