Lok Sabha Speaker: Will Om Birla be the speaker of Lok Sabha again? Know which names are being discussed

New Delhi: The responsibility of building a consensus on the post of Lok Sabha Speaker has been given to senior BJP leader and Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. On Tuesday, an important meeting of BJP and alliance leaders was held at the Defense Minister’s house regarding the candidate for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker. There was discussion on the post of Speaker. The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha will begin from June 24. During this time, new members of the Lok Sabha will take oath and then the Speaker of the Lok Sabha will be elected on June 26. Sources are telling that BJP has also sought suggestions from allies. It is also being said that the allies have left the decision to BJP. It will decide about this.

The meeting took place at the residence of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh

Union ministers Piyush Goyal, Bhupendra Yadav, Manohar Lal, Dharmendra Pradhan, Kiren Rijiju, S. Jaishankar, Virendra Kumar and Annapurna Devi attended the meeting held at the Defence Minister’s residence. Some leaders of NDA constituents, including JDU’s Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lallan Singh and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas)’s Chirag Paswan, were also present in the meeting.

These names are being discussed for the post of speaker

Many names are being discussed for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker. There is also talk of Om Birla becoming the Speaker of the Lok Sabha again. Om Birla has won from Kota Lok Sabha constituency in Rajasthan. The names of D. Purandeshwari, Radha Mohan Singh and Bhartrihari Mahtab are also being discussed for the post of Speaker. BJP National Vice President and former Union Minister Radha Mohan Singh, who hails from Bihar, has been elected MP for the sixth time. D. Purandeshwari is the head of the BJP state unit in Andhra Pradesh and is the daughter of former Chief Minister and actor NT Rama Rao (NTR) of the state. She is also a relative of TDP chief and CM Chandrababu Naidu. In such a situation, if BJP chooses her name, then TDP will also have no objection. Purandeshwari was earlier in Congress, but in 2014 she joined BJP. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, she has been elected MP from Rajmundri. Bhartrihari Mahtab is a leader of Odisha BJP. Earlier he/she was associated with Biju Janata Dal for a long time. This time BJP has performed well in the Lok Sabha elections as well as the Assembly elections in Odisha and BJP has formed the government in the state for the first time. In such a situation, it is possible that Odisha may get preference in the election of the Speaker. Congress MP K. Suresh has been made the Protem Speaker. The newly elected MPs for the 18th Lok Sabha will be sworn in for the first two days. A Protem Speaker has been appointed for the oath taking.

The opposition can also field a candidate

This time BJP has not been able to achieve the magic figure of 272 seats on its own. It had to take the support of Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP and JDU. In such a situation, before taking any decision, BJP is also discussing with its allies. In 2014 and 2019, BJP had elected the Lok Sabha Speaker on its own. It is not yet clear whether the opposition alliance INDIA will also field its candidate for the Speaker. Till now the tradition has been that the Speaker is elected unanimously. The opposition demands that it should get the post of Deputy Speaker, but BJP wants to give the post of Deputy Speaker to its ally.
