‘Fake eyelashes’, ‘butch body’, ‘bleach blonde’…: US lawmakers trade insults

Tensions ran high during a United States House committee meeting with lawmakers from the Republican and Democratic parties exchanging insulting remarks.

Republican Party Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene made a comment on Democratic Party Representative Jasmine Crockett’s appearance, which sparked outrage, CNN reported.

A House panel met Thursday to discuss holding Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt over his refusal to hand over the audio recording of President Joe Biden’s interview with special counsel Robert Hur.

During the hearing, Green told Crockett, “I think your fake eyelashes are ruining what you’re reading.”

According to ABC News, Democrats called on Crockett to remove Greene’s eyelash comment from the record and bar the congresswoman from speaking for the remainder of the proceedings. Green continued to yell repeatedly that she was “not apologizing.”

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says Greene’s comments were “absolutely unacceptable – how dare you attack another person’s physical appearance?”

To this Green responded, “Are your feelings hurt? Oh,” Green replied. “Why don’t you argue with me?”

Ocasio-Cortez then replied: “I think it’s absolutely clear.” And Green responded: “Yeah, you don’t have enough intelligence.”

CNN reported that Crockett, however, did not approve of Greene’s comments. And took a dig that appeared to be directed at Republicans.

“I’m just curious. Just to better understand your decision. If someone on this committee started talking about someone’s white, skinny body, that wouldn’t be personality conflict, right? ” Crockett said.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer responded, “Uh, now what?”

Speaker Mike Johnson said Friday he was disappointed by the chaos and name-calling.

“It was not a good look for Congress,” the speaker told ABC News. “We all – I think – need to control emotions better and get things done.”
