New Delhi : India and China on Thursday agreed to work “proactively” and intensify their efforts to ensure complete disengagement of troops from the remaining friction points in eastern Ladakh. National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in St Petersburg with a focus on an early resolution of the long-standing standoff at the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Doval told Wang that peace in the border areas and respect for the LAC are essential for normalizing bilateral relations. The meeting between Doval and Wang took place on the sidelines of the conference of National Security Advisors of BRICS countries in the Russian city of St. Petersburg. BRICS includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The Ministry of External Affairs said that the meeting gave both sides an opportunity to review recent efforts towards finding an early solution to the remaining issues on the Line of Actual Control.

Agreement on withdrawal of troops

It said in a statement that both sides agreed to work diligently and intensify their efforts to ensure complete disengagement of troops from the remaining friction points. The Foreign Ministry said both sides should fully abide by the relevant bilateral agreements and protocols entered into by the two governments in the past. The ministry said both sides agreed that bilateral relations between India and China are important not only for the two countries but also for the region and the world.

Exchange of views on regional situation

It said the two sides also exchanged views on the global and regional situation. The meeting between Doval and Wang comes two weeks after diplomatic talks between India and China. During that time, the two sides agreed to increase contact through diplomatic and military means to find a solution to pending issues. The standoff between the armies of India and China has been going on since May 2020 and the border dispute has not been fully resolved yet, although both sides have retreated from several confrontational points.

Relations between the two countries became strained after the fierce clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020. India has consistently maintained that its relations with China cannot be normal until there is peace in the border areas. So far, 21 rounds of Corps Commander level talks have taken place between the two sides to resolve the deadlock.
