A District Consumer Court in Delhi held Bollywood lyricist and writer Manoj Muntashir guilty of ‘deficiency in service’ and ordered him/her to refund more than Rs 26 lakh to the organization from which he/she had taken this money for ‘Ram Katha’. The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission located in IP Estate passed this order on the basis of a one-sided hearing. Ltd. to return Rs 26 lakh 45 thousand 730 spent by the complainant ‘Om Lok Ashram’ along with simple interest. The consumer court held the Bollywood lyricist guilty of ‘deficiency in service’ to the complainant as he/she falsely promised booking for ‘Ram Katha’ in the name of the organisation ‘Sadaiv Ram’ and sat on the complainant’s hard earned money. The court said that there would not be a glut of high profile cases here. The court said that usually most such disputes are often settled out of court to avoid negative publicity. However, in this case the defence of the defendant was withdrawn. The order was passed on July 18. The consumer court reiterated that the main remedy for breach of contract is compensation for the aggrieved party’s loss.

What was the matter?

The ashram filed a complaint in the matter through its president. In the complaint filed through advocate Deepak Jain, the ashram accused Manoj Muntashir Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. of ‘deficiency in service’. The complainant said that he/she had decided to organize a large-scale “Ram Katha” in the name of “Sadaiv Ram” at Tyag Raj Stadium on June 11, 2023. For this, the organizing committee had invited Union Minister Nitin Gadkari as the chief guest. The Katha was to be organized from 4 pm to 9 pm, for which invitations were sent to many eminent persons. The organizing committee contacted international singers Amarjit Singh Bijli, Daler Mehndi and Manoj Muntashir Shukla for this. It was claimed that while Bijli and Mehndi refused to take payment for the cultural program, Manoj demanded Rs 15 lakh 16 thousand with GST. Apart from this, he/she demanded VIP facilities for himself and his/her staff from travel to stay here. It was alleged that despite doing all this, Muntashir reached the venue late. By then the program was completely ruined. According to Ashram, despite all this, Muntashir sent them an email after reaching Mumbai and started blaming the complainant for the deficiency in service.
