Bangladesh overtakes Pakistan in violence against Hindus, 2200 attacks so far


New Delhi: The central government told Parliament on Friday that 2,200 cases of violence against Hindus and other minorities have been reported in Bangladesh till December 8 this year. Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh gave this information in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha. he/she said that India hopes that Bangladesh will take necessary steps to ensure the safety of minorities.

Bangladesh has 2200 cases while Pakistan has 112 cases.

Citing figures from minority and human rights organisations, MoS Kirtivardhan Singh said Bangladesh reported 2200 cases till December. Whereas in Pakistan, 112 such cases were registered till October 2024. The Minister of State for External Affairs said that in the year 2022, there were 47 cases of attacks on minorities in Bangladesh and 241 cases in Pakistan. In 2023, these figures were 302 in Bangladesh and 103 in Pakistan.

Center scolds Pakistan-Bangladesh

The Indian government has asked Pakistan to take steps to prevent religious intolerance, communal violence, persecution and attacks on minority communities and ensure their security. India continues to highlight the plight of minorities in Pakistan at international forums. The Union Minister further said that except Pakistan and Bangladesh, there are zero cases of violence against Hindus and other minorities in other neighboring countries.

Union Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh gave this information when he/she was asked about the cases of violence against Hindus and other minorities and the steps taken by the ministry. he/she said that the government has taken serious note of these incidents and has shared its concerns with the Government of Bangladesh. India expects Bangladesh to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety and welfare of Hindus and other minorities.

The Union Minister said that the same thing was reiterated during the visit of the Foreign Secretary to Bangladesh on December 9, 2024. On unrest in Bangladesh, he/she said the Indian High Commission in Dhaka keeps a close watch on the situation related to minorities in Bangladesh. The government believes that it is the responsibility of the government of every country to ensure the safety of all citizens.
