Alia Bhatt and Shraddha Kapoor used to be a part of ‘Munjya’, the director told why the change was made

Sharvari Wagh and Abhay Singh starrer ‘Munjya’ was a hit at the box office and earned a bumper amount. This small budget film earned more than 100 crores and no special promotion was done. Not only this, there was no big star in the film, but it started getting discussed through word of mouth and the audience liked everything from the acting of the actors to the story. But do you know that Alia Bhatt and Shraddha Kapoor were first approached for ‘Munjya’? Director Aditya Sarpotdar recently talked about this in an interview. During a conversation with ‘Indian Express’, Aditya Sarpotdar was asked that there were discussions that Alia Bhatt and Shraddha Kapoor would also be seen in ‘Munjya’. But this did not happen. Were any changes made in the original draft of the story? Regarding this, he/she said, ‘The writer of the film Yogesh Chandekar saw this film as a film with a female protagonist. But the dilemma was that she is in love with her best friend, who is a teenager. This was the angle that was being brought into the narrative of the film.’

Why did the original draft change? Why was a female-centric film not made?

Aditya Sarpotdar further added, ‘When I came to this film and read the script, I said that I could not relate to the social referencing in the film because I did not understand it and it would not be right for me to comment on it. I had seen a film about two people who were in the same situation in life where they were in love with an older girl. The hero respected that and looked at it in a very sensitive way. he/she believed in consent instead of a guy who was obsessed and crazy about the girl he/she loved and went to the extent of killing her.’

That’s why the middle aged man did not want to take it

Aditya also explained why he/she did not want Munjya to be a female-centric film. he/she said, “I thought the audience will understand it better if there are two people walking in the same direction. Dinesh Vijan understood this. Yogesh also agreed. I was adamant on not casting a middle-aged man because love at first sight and a relationship with a middle-aged man is terrible and it has become very clichéd now. We often see middle-aged people falling in love with younger girls. I wanted a 19-year-old boy who feels that he/she has fallen in love with an older girl. he/she is at a stage where he/she does not understand what life is and this is his/her journey. That’s how Abhay was signed. he/she fit the role.”

Earlier there was a plan to take Ayushmann Khurrana and Rajkumar Rao

Aditya Sarpotdar told that after thinking about signing stars like Ayushmann Khurrana and Rajkumar Rao for ‘Munjya’, he/she signed Abhay Verma for the lead role. According to the director, he/she held a lot of auditions for this role. he/she did not want an older hero, but a 19-20 year old boy.
