4 bowlers have taken wickets on 4 consecutive balls in T20I, one bowler missed out in WC 2024

New Delhi. In cricket, taking three wickets in three consecutive balls i.e. a ‘hat-trick’ is a big achievement. It has been 147 years since the beginning of Test cricket and 53 years since the beginning of ODI, but the number of bowlers who have done this feat is limited to 100. Talking about T20I, it may have been more than 19 years since its beginning, but 61 hat-tricks have been recorded in this format so far. Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga, New Zealand’s Tim Southee, Serbia’s Mark Pavlovic and Australia’s Pat Cummins have done this feat twice each.

The reason for the number of hat-tricks in T20I being more than Test and ODI is that the game in this format is played at a fast pace. In T20 cricket, the batsmen bat fast and also take a lot of risks to speed up the score. In such a situation, the chances of their getting out also increase. This is the reason that apart from hat-tricks in this format, some bowlers have also done the feat of taking wickets on 4 consecutive balls. So far in T20 International, four players – Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga, Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan, Ireland’s Curtis Campher and West Indies’ Jason Holder have taken wickets on 4 consecutive balls. Campher did this feat in the T20 World Cup 2021.

Rashid took 5 wickets for 27 runs in four overs. Due to his/her lethal bowling, in response to Afghanistan’s score of 7/210, the Ireland team could only score 178 runs by losing 8 wickets in 20 overs and lost the match by 32 runs.

Malinga equaled Rashid’s achievement in 2019 itself

About 6 months after Rashid Khan’s achievement, Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga equalled the feat against New Zealand (Sri Lanka Vs New Zealand). In the third match played in Pallikal under the T20 series between the two countries, Malinga took the wickets of Kiwi team’s Colin Munro, Hamish Rutherford, Colin de Grandhomme and Ross Taylor on the third, fourth, fifth and sixth balls of his/her second and third overs of the innings. Out of these four batsmen, Munro was bowled while the other three batsmen were LBW. Malinga, who has a ‘slingy’ action, took 5 wickets for 6 runs in four overs in this match. In response to Sri Lanka’s score of 125 runs for 8 wickets, New Zealand’s innings was limited to 88 runs in 16 overs and the team lost the match by 37 runs.
