After the recent Dhruv accident, there is a ban on flying of 330 indigenous helicopters, possible transmission fault is being investigated.

New Delhi: This week three coast guard personnel died in an ALH Dhruv helicopter crash. Initial investigation suggests a transmission fault. After this accident, about 330 ALH helicopters made in the country have been stopped for investigation.

The crew had informed about loss of control before the accident.

According to the information, the crew had reported loss of control a few seconds before the accident. The helicopter fell rapidly to the ground. The flight data shows no apparent reason for the loss of control. The investigation team is now examining the transmission system.

Changes were made in the transmission system of the helicopter

Earlier, LLR of Netherlands had reviewed the design of this helicopter. he/she gave it the green signal. Recently some changes were made in the transmission system. The control rods were also replaced due to material defects. Sources say the ALH’s accident rate is 6.5 per million hours of flight. The global average for helicopters in this category is 7.5 per lakh hours. The ALH fleet has flown more than 4.5 lakh hours so far. They provide service from sea to high mountain areas.

9 major accidents in 10 years

From 2004 to 2024, there have been nine major accidents involving this fleet. Of these, three were due to human error and three due to technical fault. The remaining reasons could not be known. The Air Force has the best safety record with this fleet. Most incidents have happened with the Coast Guard. Last year, a helicopter fell into the sea during a rescue operation at night. The Army and manufacturer HAL will jointly decide on resuming flights.

Helicopter is made under Made in India

AHL Helicopters is a great example of ‘Made in India’. It can perform a variety of missions. This includes transportation of troops and supplies, search and rescue, and surveillance. Due to its capability and versatility it is an essential tool for the army.

This accident is raising questions on the safety of AHL. All helicopters have been grounded until the investigation is completed and the cause is known. It is important to ensure that such accidents do not happen in future. Necessary steps should be taken for this. This accident is a big blow for the Coast Guard. They have lost three brave soldiers.
