Cough medicine or drugs? Demand for Indian cough syrup in Bangladesh, BSF seized 3 thousand bottles

New Delhi: A large number of cough syrups are being smuggled from India to Bangladesh. Smugglers caught trying to smuggle on the India-Bangladesh border told BSF officials that Indian cough syrup is being used in many ways in Bangladesh. Not only is it meant to cure cough, some people are also drinking it to get intoxicated. Due to this, a large number of cough syrups are being smuggled from India to Bangladesh via West Bengal.

Cough syrup worth more than Rs 1.5 crore seized

The situation is such that in just two months the soldiers have seized cough syrup worth more than Rs 1.5 crore. Whereas the value of the cough syrup which was not caught is considered to be much higher than the cough syrup which was caught. On October 29, BSF personnel deployed on the India-Bangladesh border in North 24 Parganas and Malda districts of West Bengal seized more than three thousand cough syrup bottles in separate operations.

High demand for Indian syrup in Bangladesh

Officials of BSF South Bengal Frontier say that an attempt is being made to smuggle drugs in large quantities along the India-Bangladesh border. There is a huge demand for Indian cough syrup in Bangladesh. A few days ago, BSF along with Murutia Police had seized 13 thousand 602 bottles of cough syrup in Murshidabad district. BSF South Bengal DIG N. Of. Pandey said that in view of such smuggling, surveillance has been increased on the India-Bangladesh border and surrounding areas. BSF jawans are actively keeping an eye on the area. The soldiers are ensuring that the country’s borders remain safe.

Increased demand at medical stores?

Due to smuggling into Bangladesh, cough syrup usually remains almost out of stock in medical stores in Indian areas bordering Bangladesh. There is huge demand for it in West Bengal. Smugglers also pay higher prices than its MRP to medical store owners and suppliers. Despite this, it is in high demand in Bangladesh.
