This is amazing brother…understand how one server brought the planes of the whole world to a halt

New Delhi: Friday did not start well not only for India but for the entire world. As soon as Microsoft’s server went down, the pace of work came to a halt. Employees working in offices, banks, health sector and airlines suffered a lot. Suddenly the screen of the laptop or desktop turned blue.
Due to this, major airlines around the world stopped their operations for some time. Flight Information Display System (FIDS) also started showing blue screen and airport and airline services came to a complete halt. However, in India, apart from airline services, other sectors did not suffer much. Let us understand how the downing of Microsoft affected airlines around the world. Why was Microsoft down suddenly?
Actually, the reason for this problem was a technical problem, which was reported by the cyber security company CrowdStrike in its software worldwide. Efforts were also being made to fix this problem. CrowdStrike provides antivirus software to Microsoft for its Windows devices. Microsoft had said in a statement that due to CrowdStrike’s update in the morning, many IT systems around the world crashed. We are helping our customers to get the system running again.

From airports, banks, hospitals to emergency services, everything is shut down… What happened that caused chaos in the whole world
Air service collapsed
The problem affected almost every sector where the Microsoft and CrowdStrike combo is used, be it emergency services, airports, hospitals or parcel and express courier companies. Airports and airlines in India started reporting the problems on social media. Flight Information Display Systems (FIDS) also started showing the same blue screen, called the “Blue Screen of Death”, and check-in systems were not working. As the problem spread, passengers started expressing their anger on social media about the screens turning blue or off at airports, check-in being halted and booking engines not working.

The wrong update affected not only computers but also Microsoft’s Azure platform, cloud storage and 365 services platform. Airlines and airports that used Microsoft Azure for their services were affected by this problem, so some airports were affected while others were not. It is worth noting that the airports of India’s government Airports Authority of India were spared from this problem, while private airports – Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Bangalore were affected, out of which the biggest problem was at the country’s largest airport, Delhi.

Similarly, airlines that relied heavily on Microsoft Azure to run everything from their websites and booking engines to their revenue management systems and departure control systems were hit hardest by the disruption. However, there were many airlines whose services were not disrupted. There were also some airlines whose services remained intact but faced problems due to the problems at airports.

What did the airlines do?

Computer systems were not working, so airlines started issuing boarding passes manually. This was a huge challenge for passengers who had connecting flights and needed two boarding passes. The software used by airlines and airports, such as departure control systems, was also not working because these software run on Microsoft Azure, which was the worst affected. In this way, one problem after another kept increasing.

Although airlines train their staff to do manual tasks as part of their refresher training, training for one flight is very different from handling passengers on multiple delayed flights, so airlines decided to cancel a lot of flights and delay many to get passengers to their destinations. Wherever possible, airlines tried to give passengers seats on other flights or refund money. Given the situation, airports and airlines found the best solution to keep passengers updated by writing flight status and gate information on whiteboards.
