New Delhi : There is little possibility of Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending the SCO Summit to be held in Astana, Kazakhstan on July 3-4. According to sources, PM Modi may decide not to attend the summit this time due to the Parliament session going on till July 3. PM Modi has previously regularly participated in the summit meetings of the Eurasian block. This time it was expected that PM Modi could hold bilateral talks with President Vladimir Putin. Apart from this, there may also be a face-to-face meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Pakistan PM Shahbaz Sharif.

However, India has previously stated that it attaches great importance to the SCO for peace, stability and economic development of the region. PM Modi gave the slogan of SECURE in 2018. It means – Security, Economy and Trade, Connectivity, Unity, Respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, Environment. Despite being a full member of the SCO, India is different in this group in the sense that it is the only member not to support China’s BRI and does not have any bilateral engagement with Pakistan.

India has used the SCO platform to repeatedly remind member countries, especially Pakistan and China, that one of the group’s core objectives was to fight terrorism and to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations.
