Zakir Hussain’s father had played Tabla in his/her ear instead of Namaz, on protest he/she said – I am a devotee of Goddess Saraswati.


Late tabla player Zakir Hussain has passed away and fans are remembering him/her and sharing his/her old stories. We are going to tell you an incident related to this. Zakir once talked about his/her father, Allah Rakha, when he/she held him/her in his/her arms for the first time. According to the report of news agency PTI, Zakir had talked about this eight years ago. Zakir had told how his/her father did not offer Namaz in his/her ear when he/she was born, but welcomed him/her into this world by playing the rhythm of the tabla. A few years ago, Zakir had said, ‘I was brought home and in my father’s lap. Was handed over. The tradition was that the father had to recite namaz in the child’s ear, welcome the child and say some nice words. So he/she took me in his/her arms, placed his/her lips on my ears and played the rhythm of the tabla in my ears.

he/she further said, ‘My mother was angry. he/she said, ‘What are you doing? You should say prayers, not rhymes.’ And he/she said, but these are my prayers. This is how I pray. he/she said, ‘I am a worshiper of Goddess Saraswati and Lord Ganesha.’ he/she said that he/she got this knowledge from his/her teachers and he/she wants to pass it on to his/her son.

used to sleep with the tabla in his/her lap

he/she received his/her early education at St. Michael’s School in Mahim and graduated from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. In his/her early days, he/she used to travel by train and if he/she could not get a seat, he/she would sleep by spreading newspapers on the floor. According to PTI, during such travels, he/she used to sleep with his/her tabla in his/her lap so that no one’s feet would touch his/her tabla.
