Call it the shortcomings of the system or the hit of the bumper crop. A farmer has sold 512 kg of onions and in return he/she was handed over a check of two rupees by the trader of the market committee. This incident is from Solapur district of Maharashtra. Where farmers are not getting the price of onion due to bumper production. Actually, this is the incident of 58 year old farmer Rajendra Tukaram Chavan. he/she is a resident of Borgaon village of Barshi taluka of Solapur district. This year, there has been a bumper production of onions in his/her farm, but there are no buyers for it in the market.
According to a Times of India report, Tukaram takes his/her crop to the Solapur APMC market, 70 miles away, in search of a better price. he/she had taken a total of 512 kg onions. he/she succeeds in selling his/her crop there at the rate of one rupee per kg. Tukaram tells that the price of his/her onion was Re 1 per kg. According to this, his/her account has been made Rs.512. Then the APMC trader deducted Rs 509.50 from this as freight, weight and loading charges. his/her filing account became Rs 2.49. Then according to the bank rules this Rs 2.49 was rounded off to Rs 2. Received a post dated check of Rs 2, which he/she can get encashed after 15 days.
According to the report, due to the bumper crop, the price has completely fallen in the country’s largest onion producing area. Tukaram says that last year when the price was good, he/she sold onions at Rs.20 per kg. What is the logic behind issuing a postdated check for Rs 2 to Tukaram. In this regard, trader Naseer Khalifa tells the newspaper that now the whole process has become computerized. For this reason Tukaram had to issue a cheque. However, Khalifa further explains that this time the quality of the onions brought by Tukaram was very low. When he/she had brought high quality onion, its price was Rs 18 per kg. Then when he/she brought the second onion, he/she got the price of Rs 14 per kg. Quoting experts, the newspaper writes that farmers get good quality only in 25 percent of the crop. About 30 percent of the crop is of medium quality. The rest of the level is low.
