You must have heard about the company, corps and command of the army? Understand everything about them today

New Delhi: Whenever you watch or read army news related to Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh or Line of Control (LOC) in Kashmir, then Northern Command is mentioned in it. Similarly, when we read about Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and the Line of Actual Control here, there is mention of the Eastern Command of the Army. From the operational point of view and for the convenience of management, the Indian Army has 7 commands, out of which six are operational commands and one is training command. Under the command, come the corps, then the division, then the brigade and then below it the battalion. There are many companies in a battalion also.

The headquarters of the Indian Army is in Delhi and the responsibility of the headquarters rests with the Army Chief. The operational commander has the most important role in any operation. The command of the Indian Army is headed by an officer of the rank of Lieutenant General. That means three star officers are its heads. A command generally comprises three to four corps. The Army Corps is also headed by a Lieutenant General rank officer. Below the corps are divisions, which are headed by Major General rank officers. he/she is called division commander. These are two star officers.

From division to battalion

Below the division are brigades. Generally there are 3 or 4 brigades under a division. Some brigades are also independent, that is, they do not come under the division and come directly under the army commander or corps command. The brigade is headed by a Brigadier i.e. a one star officer. he/she is called brigade commander. A brigade generally consists of three-four battalions. The battalion is headed by a Colonel rank officer. he/she is called Commanding Officer i.e. CO. Below the battalion are companies, which are headed by young officers of Major rank. he/she is the company commander. There are about 700 to 800 soldiers in a battalion.

Where is the headquarters of which command?

The headquarters of the Army’s Eastern Command is in Kolkata, the headquarters of the Central Command is in Lucknow, and the headquarters of the Northern Command is in Udhampur. The headquarters of Southern Command is in Pune, the headquarters of South Western Command is in Jaipur and the headquarters of Western Command is in Chandigarh. Apart from these six operational commands, the Army has a training command. Its headquarters is in Shimla. This is also headed by an officer of Lieutenant General rank.

Northern Command has an important responsibility

Before assuming the post of Army Chief, General Upendra Dwivedi was the Vice Chief and before that General Officer Commanding in the Northern Command i.e. Northern Army Commander. Northern Command is an important command of the Army. Northern Command is responsible for both Line of Control i.e. LOC and Line of Actual Control i.e. LAC adjoining Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh. Besides, Northern Command also plays an important role in anti-terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
