You have forgotten the most sacred duty… Which letter of 2021 did Modi’s minister show to Mamata on women’s safety?

New Delhi : There is a ruckus going on in the case of rape and murder of a female doctor in the government RG Kar Medical College Hospital of West Bengal. There is a lot of anger among the doctors there about this. Protests are being held at many places. Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee government of West Bengal has passed a new bill to take strict action against the criminals. However, the Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has questioned Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s handling of the case. Sharing a letter from 2021, he/she wrote that I am saddened that the Chief Minister of West Bengal ignored her most sacred duty to provide speedy justice to women and children.

Know what Kiren Rijiju said

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju shared a letter from 2021 on his/her official X account. In this, he/she wrote that Parliament had passed a strict law to deal with heinous crimes like rape in 2018 itself. Rijiju’s post comes a day after the West Bengal Assembly unanimously passed the Aparajita Mahila Bal (West Bengal Criminal Law Amendment) Bill, 2024.

Kiren Rijiju wrote on X that I am saddened that the Chief Minister of West Bengal ignored her most sacred duty to provide immediate justice to women and children. This letter of 2021 clearly shows this. In 2018, a strict law was passed by the Parliament to deal with heinous crimes like rape. State governments should take strict action in such cases.

Rijiju reminded of the bill passed in Parliament in 2018

Rijiju said in the letter that Parliament had passed a law in 2018 containing provisions for setting up fast-track special courts (FTSC) to expedite trials under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The Department of Justice was implementing this central scheme of FTSC under the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2018, the letter said. Additionally, as per the direction of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, in every district where the number of POCSO-related cases pending was more than 100, a special POCSO (ePOCSO) court was required to be set up.

The Union Minister made this appeal to Mamta Banerjee

Rijiju highlighted the pending rape cases in West Bengal as of May 2021 and urged the state government to take action on it. The letter said that as per the available information, 28559 rape and POCSO Act cases are pending in the state of West Bengal as of May 2021. he/she also said that it would be highly appreciated if you could review the matter at your level so that the consent of the state government can be obtained soon. The Department of Justice can consider releasing the funds as per the terms of the scheme.
