Rahul is unbeaten on 62 runs in the second innings of the Perth Test match. Along with Yashasvi Jaiswal, he/she has added 172 runs for the first wicket. Rahul, who was controversially out for 26 runs in the first innings, gave all his/her experience in the second innings. he/she along with young Jaiswal took the innings forward. The Indian team has taken a lead of 218 runs in the second innings. The second and third sessions were entirely in the name of Rahul and Jaiswal. In the second session, Rahul and Yashasvi scored 84 runs in 26 overs while both scored 88 runs in 31 overs.

Earlier, the opening pair of Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan had played innings of 70 and 85 runs respectively in Melbourne in 1981. Gavaskar and Srikanth, while opening, played innings of 166 and 51 runs in Adelaide in 1985. In 1986, Gavaskar scored 172 and Srikanth scored 116 runs in the opening in Sydney.
