Will the Women’s T20 World Cup be organised under army surveillance?

Dhaka. Political instability continues in Bangladesh after the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. In view of this, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has sought security assurance from the country’s army chief for the organization of the Women’s T20 World Cup to be held between October 3 and 20. The Women’s T20 World Cup will be held in two cities of Bangladesh, Sylhet and Mirpur. The practice matches of the tournament will start from September 27.

According to Cricbuzz, BCB has written a letter to Bangladesh Army Chief General Wakar Uz Zaman seeking security assurances for the tournament. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is also monitoring the situation in Bangladesh where hundreds of people lost their lives in violent protests against the government and Sheikh Hasina had to resign from her post. ICC can organize this tournament in the same time zone and in such a case it will have options of India, United Arab Emirates and Sri Lanka.

BCB umpiring committee chairman Iftikhar Ahmed wrote the letter
BCB Umpiring Committee Chairman Iftikhar Ahmed Mithu said, “We are trying to host the tournament. We have sent a letter to the Army Chief on Thursday seeking assurances regarding the security of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup as we have only two months left now.”

ICC will wait till August 10
It is learnt that the ICC will wait till August 10 before deciding on the venue of the tournament after assessing the condition of the ground in Bangladesh. Currently, protests and violence are continuing in Bangladesh. Due to this, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina hastily resigned and left the country and took refuge in India. The mob also raided the luxurious ‘Ganabhavan’, the official residence of the Prime Minister. They looted heavily and took away TVs, furniture and many other items, even clothes.
