Will the 12th board exam change completely? Class 12 board result will be made by combining the marks of 9th, 10th, 11th… everyone!

NCERT’s unit ‘Parakh’ has submitted a report to the Ministry of Education. In this, measures have been suggested to make the evaluation process uniform in all school board examinations. It has been said that the performance of 9th, 10th and 11th class should also be included in the final marks of 12th board. The performance of children in all these classes will be decided keeping in mind both their exams and class work.

How much weightage to which class for 12th board

The class wise weightage has been determined as follows-

Class Weightage
9th 15%
10th 20%
11th 25%
12th 40%

According to the report of ‘Parakh’, the assessment of students should be a combination of formative assessment (continuous classroom assessment through exam report cards, group discussions, projects, etc.) and summative assessment (term end exam). On this basis, the report has suggested that-

  • In class 9th, 70% of the final marks should be taken from Formative Assessment and 30% from Summative Assessment.
  • In 10th class this should be given 50-50% weightage.
  • For class 11th this ratio will be 40% and 60% respectively.
  • In class 12th, the weightage of formative assessment will be reduced to 30% and the total of final marks will be based on 70% summative assessment.

‘Parakh’ has also suggested in its recommendations that the assessment should be done in terms of credit. That is-

  • A student can score 40-40 credits in class 9th and 10th and 44-44 credits in class 11th and 12th.
  • In classes 9th and 10th, 32 credits will be subject specific (12 credits in three languages, four credits in Maths, 4 for Science, 4 for Social Science, etc.).
  • The recommendations include that boards should develop a system of credit transfer in line with the National Credit Framework.

What did the state school boards say?

According to the Indian Express report, this report has been shared with all school boards for their feedback. The first round of discussions was held last week with officials from Haryana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. It is being said that in this meeting, the states argued for a different approach to include class-wise performance.

States argued that instead of including class 9, 10 and 11 performance in the final class 12 report card, 40% marks of class 9 and 60% marks of class 10 should be added to the final class 10 mark. Similarly, 40% marks of class 11 and 60% marks of class 12 should be added to the final class 12 mark. ‘Parakh’ will now hold discussions with the rest of the state school boards in August.

What is Parakh?

Parakh was set up last year to standardise assessments across school boards across the country. Its work is set in line with the National Education Policy. This includes capacity development, achievement surveys, equality of school boards and uniform assessment standards. After discussions with 32 school boards over the past year, Parakh submitted this report to the Union Education Ministry this month.
