New Delhi: Friday is a very important day for former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi and Aam Aadmi Party leader Manish Sisodia. The Supreme Court will hear on Friday the bail plea of Sisodia in the Delhi Excise Policy scam and money laundering cases. A bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Bela M. Trivedi will hear two petitions filed by the AAP leader on Sisodia’s bail plea. These have challenged the decisions of the Delhi High Court which had denied him/her bail in separate cases being probed by the CBI and the ED.
Delhi High Court refused to grant bail
Chief Justice D.Y. A bench headed by Chandrachud had on Monday agreed to list the special leave petitions on July 14. Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Sisodia, sought urgent listing of the matter citing ill health of his/her wife Seema Sisodia. The senior Aam Aadmi Party leader had moved the apex court last week after the Delhi High Court refused to grant him/her bail in connection with allegations of money laundering being probed by the ED. A division bench of the court refused bail to Sisodia on July 3, saying he/she was not able to satisfy the twin conditions for bail under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the triple test for grant of bail.
CBI arrested on 26 February and ED on 9 March
Earlier, the High Court had denied him/her bail in the CBI case related to the same scam, observing that the charges against him/her were very serious. The Enforcement Directorate on July 7 said it has attached assets worth Rs 52.24 crore of Sisodia, his/her wife and some other accused in the Delhi Excise Policy case. Sisodia was arrested by the ED on March 9 after the CBI arrested him/her on February 26 this year. In April, Special Judge M.K. Nagpal had refused bail to the AAP leader saying that the evidence, prima facie, speaks volumes about his/her involvement in the crime.
