Will BJP make Smriti Irani the new face of the party in Delhi elections? Political speculations intensify

New Delhi: Former Amethi MP Smriti Irani’s increasing involvement in BJP’s activities in Delhi has led to a buzz in the party unit over her possible role in the national capital’s politics ahead of next year’s assembly elections. Born and brought up in Delhi, the former Union minister is seen actively participating in events related to the party’s membership drive in the capital. Party leaders said she has been assigned the task of overseeing the membership drive in seven of the 14 district units in Delhi. Party insiders also claimed that Irani has bought a house in south Delhi which indicates her further increasing involvement in party activities in the national capital. A senior BJP leader said, these developments are being witnessed at a time when a section of party leaders is pushing to bring forward a face who can give a tough fight to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Delhi assembly elections.

The BJP contested the 2020 assembly elections without declaring any leader as its chief ministerial candidate. he/she said the party managed to win eight of the 70 seats while the AAP won the rest. Another top BJP leader from Delhi said if the idea of contesting the elections with a chief ministerial candidate gains momentum in the coming weeks, questions will naturally arise about the suitable leader for the responsibility.

In such a situation, Irani as well as other leaders like MPs Manoj Tiwari and Bansuri Swaraj, BJP’s Delhi unit president Virendra Sachdeva and former West Delhi MP Parvesh Verma could be potential contenders for the role, he/she said. he/she claimed that the entire party uniting behind one leader will send a message of unity and will also strengthen the campaign.
