Will AI take over the director’s chair? Film experts said – it should be made a partner, not an opponent

Will AI say Light, Camera, Action? The way Artificial Intelligence is spreading its wings, this is what it seems now. However, film experts say that this will help a lot in the production of films.

Highlights

  • What impact is the advent of AI and chatGPT having on filmmakers?
  • Will movies be made only using artificial intelligence?
  • Some are saying that Artificial Intelligence is a threat and some are saying that it is convenient
Despite the long strike against AI in Hollywood, the influence of AI has increased a lot in the last one year. Many short films have been written and directed with the help of Artificial Intelligence. Recently, the trailer of the world’s first AI generated film ‘Next Stop Paris’ has been launched. The way AI is being used in various aspects of film making, the debate has gained momentum whether Artificial Intelligence will take over the director’s chair? An investigation. Recently, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ director Joe Russo said that the day is not far when Artificial Intelligence will take over the reins of directing films by saying light, camera action. Russo Brother clearly said, ‘New technology is very important for today’s GEN Z (generation born between 1997 and 2012). It is likely that in the next two years, AI will be used extensively in films as well. A film can be made on me and Marilyn Monroe with just one command of AI technology.’ There was no less uproar at that time when the film ‘The Safe Zone’ written and directed by Artificial Intelligence was made with the help of chatGPT. Recently, the world’s first AI generated film ‘Next Stop Paris’ was also very popular.

We have to face it

Russo, who came into the limelight with ‘Citadel’, expressed his/her concern over AI. Not only Hollywood, many Bollywood directors also seem concerned about AI. Director Ali Abbas Zafar has called AI a challenge and said that it is no less than a demon and we have to face it. At the same time, filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane says, ‘There is definitely a threat, an existential threat. AI can do amazing things and can also reduce the budget of your film. It is capable of doing many other things in film making. It is also true that after this many people may lose their jobs. Therefore, we have to strike a balance. I have not used it personally and I do not want to do so. Maybe I am a bit old fashioned in this matter.

I will make you my partner, not my opponent

Apart from visual effects, AI is being used indiscriminately in writing and in future its penetration will increase in other departments of filmmaking. In such a situation, well-known directors like Anand L Rai are ready to keep pace with Artificial Intelligence. he/she says, ‘No, I do not think AI can be a threat to the director. Ultimately, it does not have the power to go beyond human intent. Instead of considering it your competition, consider it your partner. We have to understand the technology of AI. I am not considering it my opposition, I am understanding it. One must upgrade oneself through any technology. I will learn it and it will become a part of me. It will be a partner in my filmmaking, which will make my film look better. Ultimately, we need to understand that it will be we humans who will give command to AI.’ At the same time, director Vishal Bhardwaj also agrees with Anand L Rai and says, ‘I want to try AI. We have to adopt it instead of fighting it. Even after the advent of computers, everyone thought that jobs would be lost, but today humans are working on machines. If AI was that smart, they would have become the next Shakespeare or Tagore. But we should not forget that this is artificial intelligence, it cannot match the human brain. You can never get those kind of results.

Otherwise, novice directors will move ahead

After the trailer launch of the AI generated film Next Stop Paris, the trailer faced a lot of trolling. People said that there is a lot of scope for improvement in this film made with the help of AI. Rupesh Gujar, AI expert and VFX producer of film production Verve Digital Technology, has done about 50 Hollywood films like Titanic 3D, Transformers, Roadside and Shrikant in Bollywood. he/she says, ‘I believe that filmmaking is a creative process, in which human emotions, cultural understanding, and personal perspective play an important role and when we talk about AI, it needs human intelligence. But it cannot be denied that it will be challenging for directors. A director with a little less experience can become a better director with the help of AI than an experienced director. However, AI also needs a person to drive it. If you give it the right command, it will give the right result. According to me, by adopting this technology, the director can speed up his/her work. You have to adopt this technique, otherwise it is possible that someone less experienced than you or a novice may surpass you.

We can’t be careless about AI

Rajiv Rajasekharan, who has worked as a VFX creative head in many films like Koi Mil Gaya, 3 Idiots, Dhamaka, Rudra (series), Fukrey 3, says, ‘If seen in this way, the writers, cameramen and people associated with other technical departments associated with film making are at risk. Now, just like a director does the complete planning of the film, pre-production planning, script writing, visual effects, post production editing etc. can be done with the help of AI. There may be an advantage for small budget films due to less time and cost, but AI will not be able to reach the director’s chair directly, because along with creativity, the director has a leadership quality. Only the director can know the director’s vision. Till now AI has not been able to capture the emotions of the characters. You can get the script written by AI, but not the emotions. I don’t think directors need to be afraid of AI. But they cannot remain careless about it either.’
