‘Wild Wild Punjab’ Review: These ‘Fukrey’ are victims of a cheap ‘hangover’

Drugs, alcohol, girls, pills and abuses… Are these the first things that come to your mind when Punjab is mentioned? Or do you feel more Punjabi by calling Arora Arora and Khanna Khanne? I don’t know about you, but our Bollywood film writers are definitely not able to come out of this stereotypical image of Punjab. A recent example of this is the film ‘Wild Wild Punjab’, where once again you will get to see the same loud style of Punjabi culture.

Story of ‘Wild Wild Punjab’

Luv Ranjan, the creator of bromance films like ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama’ franchise and ‘Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety’, is the producer of this film. he/she is also one of the writers of the film, so here too the story is about the ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ moment i.e. road trip (absolutely bumpy) of four ‘fukras’ – sex addict Maan Arora aka Arora (Sunny Singh), Gaurav Jain aka Jainu (Jassi Gill) who lives under Papa’s thumb, lovelorn Rajesh Khanna aka Khanne (Varun Sharma) and Honey Paaji (Manjot Singh) who is crazy about Papaji and Paro (SUV).

What happens is that Khanna faces a ‘pyaar ka panchnama’. his/her love Vaishali runs away with her boss. When ‘Devdas’ Khanna is about to commit suicide, Arora advises him/her to close this chapter by going to Vaishali’s wedding and saying ‘I am over you’ in the style of ‘Jab We Met’. Then, this quartet sets out from Patiala to Pathankot to find a cure for Khanna’s heartache. But this trip creates upheaval in their lives. On one hand, Khanna becomes Radha’s (Patralekhaa) husband by getting drunk in the style of ‘Hangover’, while on the other hand, he/she gets caught in the clutches of everyone from the police Rajesh Sharma to the drug mafia because of the smart Meera (Ishita Raj) who doesn’t consider vaping as a cigarette.

‘Wild Wild Punjab’ movie review

Directed by Simarpreet Singh, this film seems like a mix of ‘Pyaar Ka Panchnama’, ‘Fukrey’ and Hollywood’s ‘Hangover’. In the name of comedy, all the clichéd scenes have been repeated in the film, from firing in a wedding procession to treatment of a human in an animal hospital. There is no special effort put into the dialogues either. Especially sexist lines like Vaishali being a prostitute hurts.

Talking about acting, Manjot Singh is the only one in the quartet who impresses. The rest Sunny Singh, Jassi Gill, Patralekha, Ishita Raj are okay in their roles. Another problem is that there is no depth in their characters. Whereas, looking at Varun Sharma, it seems that now he/she should come out of the ‘Fukrey’ choocha loop.

Apart from that, the technical aspects of the film can be said to be just fine. The film has been released on OTT, so you have to decide for yourself whether you want to waste your 1 hour 50 minutes on this ‘Wild Wild Punjab’ or not.

Why watch- If you are fond of bromance films with absurd comedy, then you can watch this film.
