WI vs SA: West Indies out of T20 World Cup, South Africa reaches semi-finals


New Delhi. The first match of the Super 8 of T20 World Cup 2024 was played between West Indies and South Africa on 24 June. South Africa registered a spectacular victory in this match. South Africa won the toss and decided to bowl first. Which proved to be effective for them. The West Indies team could score 135 runs while batting first. Chasing in the rain-affected match, the African team won. South Africa needed 123 runs in 17 overs according to the Duckworth rule. Which they achieved with 5 balls to spare. With this win, South Africa has made it to the semi-finals.

Batting first, the West Indies team scored 135 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs. Shai Hope, who came to open, flopped. he/she lost his/her wicket on the very first ball. Kyle Mayers, who came with him/her, scored a brilliant 35 runs. After this, Nicholas Pooran’s bat could not do anything special. he/she returned to the pavilion after scoring one run in 3 balls. Roston Chase played the best innings for West Indies. he/she scored 52 runs facing 42 balls on a difficult pitch. Apart from this, Andre Russell scored 15 runs. Tabrez Shamsi took 3 wickets while bowling brilliantly for South Africa.

Now it was South Africa’s turn to chase. Both the batsmen who came to open the innings lost their wickets very soon. Quinton de Kock was out after scoring 12 runs, while Reeza Hendricks got caught by Nicholas Pooran on the very first ball. Shortly after this wicket, it rained on the field. After which South Africa was given a target of 123 runs by reducing 3 overs.

Captain Aiden Markram was out after scoring 18 runs in 15 balls. On the other hand, Heinrich Klaasen took the team out of pressure by scoring 22 runs in 10 balls. Tristan Stubbs was batting well but he/she was out after scoring 29 runs. David Miller scored only 4 runs in 14 balls. In the last over, South Africa needed 5 runs to win. Marco Jansen hit a six on the first ball and gave the team victory. For West Indies, Roston Chase took 3 wickets, Andre Russell took 2 and Alzari Joseph also took 2 wickets.

West Indies out of World Cup

After this defeat, the West Indies team is out of the T20 World Cup. Whereas, South Africa’s team has reached the semi-finals. England has also reached the semi-finals from Group 2 of Super 8. Whereas, America has already been eliminated from the T20 World Cup. Now it will be interesting to see which team faces which team in the semi-finals.
