Why is there an uproar over the seating system in the Lok Sabha? NDA allies also angry with SP, Congress

New Delhi: Almost six months have passed since the 18th Lok Sabha was formed. The third session of Parliament is going on, but till now there is a dispute regarding the seats for MPs in the Lok Sabha. However, recently the picture of the seating arrangement of MPs has been allotted by the Lok Sabha Secretariat. There is a lot of resentment being seen regarding this recently. While on one hand the SP MPs in the opposition camp are not satisfied with their seating arrangement, on the other hand a constituent party in the ruling alliance has also recently registered its displeasure regarding the seating arrangement.

TDP also unhappy in NDA

In fact, while on one hand the MPs of INDIA alliance are unhappy with the change of their seats, on the other hand the members of TDP also seemed unhappy with the change of their seats. First, TDP MP M. Srinivasulu Reddy raised his/her objection in the House that he/she used to sit in the second row in the last Lok Sabha, but the fifth-time MP was now shifted from the second to the fifth row. There is resentment among all the members not only about the lines, but also about the block.

However, a former officer of the Lok Sabha Secretariat said that the allotment of seats in the House is also decided on the basis of party seats, political and parliamentary experience and seniority of the member. If a member of a party with less seats is very experienced in parliamentary and political terms, then the basis for deciding seats for him/her will be different.

India’s constituents including Akhilesh are unhappy

At the same time, MPs from many constituent parties of INDIA alliance including Akhilesh Yadav are unhappy with the new arrangement. In fact, in the 18th Lok Sabha, SP’s Akhilesh Yadav used to sit in the first row of the eighth block along with his/her Ayodhya MP Avadhesh Prasad, but now the SP leader has been sent to the seventh block. In fact, in the Lok Sabha, the first and the last i.e. the eighth block on either side of the Speaker’s seat are considered very important.

Here, the PM and senior ministers sit in the first block, whereas in the first row of the eighth block, the Deputy Speaker of the House, the Leader of Opposition and senior members of the opposition parties sit. Earlier leaders of Congress, SP and DMK used to sit in this block. The eighth block is considered important because the Deputy Speaker of the House and the Leader of Opposition sit in this block, hence, after the PM block, the PM remains the most visible block in terms of cameras.

Government reneged on its promise

The Congress leader, apparently keen to improve relations with ally SP, even approached the Parliamentary Affairs Minister to push the SP’s argument. The Congress claimed that the government has gone back on its earlier promise to allot seven frontline seats to the India Bloc (except TMC).

The SP camp is reportedly upset with Yadav being shifted to Block 3 and party MP Awadhesh Prasad not being given the second front row seat. Congress sources claimed that under an “earlier agreement with the government” to allot one seat for every 28 party members, the Congress would get ‘one front row seat for LOP (Gandhi) and three more for party leaders. ‘Row seats’ were to be given, of which two were for SP and one for DMK.

Displeasure shown due to change of place

After the new arrangement, now except DMK leader TR Baalu, SP leaders were removed from here and sent to the seventh block. While leaders like NCP-SCP’s Supriya Sule to DMK’s Kanimozhi, Dayanidhi Maran also used to sit in the second and third row in the eighth block, but now the place has been changed. Some resentment is being seen among them regarding this. Some parties of the INDIA alliance are also unhappy with the Congress.

How is the seating arrangement decided in the House?

On this entire controversy, an important Congress source said that every 28 members get a place in the first row. Based on the number of members, a total of seven seats were given to the opposition camp, in which TMC was not included. Explaining the mathematics, the source said that out of these, one seat was given to the Leader of Opposition, three to Congress, two to SP and one to DMK. Later, the government changed this formula and reduced one seat of SP, regarding which both Congress and SP had expressed their opposition to the Parliamentary Affairs Minister.
