New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going on a two-day visit to Russia from Monday. PM Modi will attend the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit in Russia. Here a complete review of the multifaceted relations between the two countries will be done. This will be Modi’s first visit to Russia in about 5 years. Putin will also organize a private dinner for Modi. Prime Minister Modi will meet the Indian community in Russia. After interacting with the Indian diaspora, the Prime Minister will pay floral tribute to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Kremlin. Modi will visit an exhibition site in Moscow. his/her last visit to Russia was in 2019 when he/she attended an economic conference in Vladivostok. The annual summit between the Prime Minister of India and the President of Russia is the highest institutional dialogue mechanism regarding the strategic partnership between the two countries. So far 21 annual summits have been held alternately between India and Russia.

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia for the upcoming summit, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said that the agenda of talks between Prime Minister Modi and President Vladimir Putin will include issues of regional and global interest. The India-Russia summit will provide an opportunity to discuss the full range of bilateral relations, including defence, investment, education and culture and people-to-people ties. Delegation-level talks will be led by the Prime Minister and the Russian President. Both sides are working on documents regarding the 22nd India-Russia Summit.

Ignoring Western countries, New Delhi has continued to pursue economic and defence ties with Moscow, especially in the field of energy. Russia is now one of the most important sources of energy resources in India. India is the world’s third-largest crude oil consumer and has been a major buyer of subsidised Russian oil since the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. India has deep economic and political ties with Moscow.

We (Russia and India) jointly participate in coordination processes. So regional affairs, regional security and global security are always on top of the agenda. Release of Indians serving in Russian army

The talks are expected to discuss the impact of the ongoing war in Ukraine on the ‘Global South’ and the issue of early release of Indian citizens who have been misled into the Russian army. The ‘Global South’ includes countries that are developing, underdeveloped. Earlier, Minister S. Jaishankar had raised the issue of Indian citizens fighting for the Russian army in the war zone with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the SCO Summit. he/she had requested to ensure their safe return.

Since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, India has been pressing Russia for the safety and repatriation of Indian nationals recruited in its military. The Ministry of External Affairs said that according to reports, about 200 Indian nationals have been recruited as security assistants in the Russian army. Discussion on Russia-Ukraine conflict

The Russia-Ukraine conflict may also be discussed during Modi’s visit to Russia. Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. There has been no high-level bilateral visit between India and Russia since then. Modi and Putin last held bilateral talks on 16 September 2022 during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. In the meeting, Modi had pressured Putin to end the conflict in Ukraine, saying that today is not the era of war.
