About Adams Peak

Adams Peak, Most visited destinations in Sri Lanka Is one of. It is a huge conical mountain, 243 meters high, on the top of which there is a sacred footprint. It is also a famous pilgrimage site for Buddhists, Christians, Muslims and Hindus and every year, thousands of religious devotees visit here.

Let us tell you, this is the seventh highest peak of Sri Lanka, which is also known as Sri Pada (Sacred Steps) and Samanala Kanda (Butterfly Mountain). Apart from being a pilgrimage site, Adams Peak is known for trekking throughout the world. Every year tourists come here in large numbers for trekking.

There is a temple on this mountain, which is famous for its footprints. According to the belief of Hindu religion, these footprints are of Lord Shiva. It is believed that Lord Shiva appeared here when he/she came to give his/her divine light to mankind. Hence it is also called Sivanolipadam (Light of Shiva). However, people of different religious communities are still stuck in their own beliefs regarding footprints.

When Lord Rama had come to take Mother Sita from Sri Lanka, Lakshmana was injured in the war between Rama and Ravana. At that time, his/her life could be saved only by Sanjeevani herb, the task of bringing which was given to Hanuman. Hanuman kept searching for Sanjeevani Booti in the mountains, but he/she could not understand anything. Then they decided to take only a piece of the mountain. According to beliefs, this is the same mountain. However, later Hanuman was successful in bringing Sanjeevani Booti.

There are three main routes to reach Adams Peak, Hatton, Ratanpura and Kuruwita. The climb to Adams Peak is traditionally done at night, allowing you to reach the summit before dawn and watch the sunrise. Seeing the sunrise here, you will feel as if you have come to heaven.

If you want to do trekking here, then it is advisable to get necessary information about the route from the guide, so that you do not have to face any kind of problem during trekking. Most of the tourists are trekking on the mountain during the pilgrimage, which starts from December or January and continues till the month of May.

The weather is at its best on the mountain during this season, and the chances of a clear morning at Adams Peak are highest. If you are trekking here, then let us tell you that to reach Adams Peak, one has to complete a tough climb of 7 km (there are about 5500 steps). To relieve fatigue, you will find small tea shops, which remain open throughout the night.

Every religion has its own beliefs regarding Adams Peak. According to Buddhism, the footprint on the top of the peak is that of Lord Buddha. Hindus consider it to be the footprint of Shiva. According to the Portuguese it is the footprint of St. Thomas the Apostle. At the same time, Muslims and Christians believe that this footprint is of Prophet Adam. They believe that when Prophet Adam was taken out of heaven and brought into the world, he/she landed on this peak of Sri Lanka.
