Republic Day is celebrated on 26 January because the Constitution of India came into full force on this day in 1950. A great republic had emerged on the world map. Republic means Gana’s system i.e. people’s system i.e. people’s rule. Not the rule of any king, nawab, emperor, emperor, but the rule of the people. Where the governance of the state is not in the hands of a person born from the womb of a queen but in the hands of the elected representative of the people.

2- Why did the Constitution come into force only on 26 January?
The country became independent on 15 August 1947. Even before that, the work of drafting the constitution had started. The first meeting of the Constituent Assembly was held on 9 December 1946. It took 2 years, 11 months and 18 days to prepare the Constitution. Open sessions were held for the public for 166 days in which the draft of the Constitution was discussed. In this way, our Constitution came into existence after 1079 days of tireless hard work. The Constitution came into partial force on 26 November 1949 but came into full effect on 26 January 1950.

After all, why was the Constitution implemented only on 26 January? It could have been implemented on any other day also. The answer is that this date was chosen very thoughtfully. In fact, on 26th January in 1930, Congress had announced the resolution of complete Swaraj in its Lahore session. In this, complete independence from British rule was demanded. In his/her memory, it was decided to implement the Constitution on 26 January 1950.

3- About 600 hours of rigorous practice before the parade.
The Republic Day Parade was organized for the first time on 26 January 1950. It was led by the then Brigadier Moti Sagar of the Gorkha Regiment. The then President of Indonesia Sukarno was the chief guest at the first Republic Day ceremony. Preparations for the parade start six months in advance in July last year. Only then are participants formally informed about their participation. These participants practice rigorously for a total of about 600 hours and only then a grand parade is organized on Republic Day. The full dress rehearsal was held on January 23 this year.

4- Every year a head of state is invited as the chief guest.
Every year, the head of the country, who can be the Prime Minister or the President, is invited as the chief guest for the Republic Day celebration. This time Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is the chief guest. Incidentally, at the first Republic Day celebration in 1950, the then Indonesian President Sukarno was the chief guest.

5- Every year the Republic Day celebration has a theme.
Every year, a theme is decided for Republic Day. Different states and government departments follow this theme. The theme for this time’s tableaux is ‘Golden India – Heritage and Development’. These tableaux will showcase India’s progress in various fields such as technology, infrastructure and cultural heritage.

6- Where does the parade start, how far does it go?
The Republic Day Parade starts from Raisina Hill near Rashtrapati Bhavan. It passes near India Gate via the duty road and reaches the historic Red Fort.

7- The first Republic Day celebration was not held on Dutvapath (earlier Rajpath)
The first Republic Day celebrations in 1950 were not held on Dutvapath, which was earlier known as Rajpath. So where did it happen? The answer is at the now Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium which was then known as Irwin Stadium. More than 100 aircraft and 3000 Indian Army personnel participated in the first Republic Day celebrations.
