New Delhi: A slave ruled the Delhi Sultanate. It was the year 1266, when this slave ascended the throne of Delhi with the support of rich Muslims in the name of Ghiyasuddin Mohammad Balban. Balban was an Ilbari Turk, who was a Turkish slave of Sultan Iltutmish. Balban was bought from Turkey by a rich Khwaja Jamaluddin Basri and brought him/her with him/her to Delhi. When Iltutmish won Gwalior, he/she bought Balban. Due to his/her ability, Balban reached high positions like Amir-e-Shikar during the times of Iltutmish and his/her daughter Razia Sultan. he/she became Amir-e-Hajib during the times of Sultan Nasiruddin Mahmud and took the reins of the entire administration in his/her hands. Then in 1266, the day also came when he/she got the throne of Delhi. he/she was so cruel and ruthless that he/she crushed the rebellious and independent Mewatis of Haryana many times. To keep the Sultanate of Delhi safe and maintain peace, he/she wanted to defeat the Mewatis, but he/she could never succeed in his/her plan. The Mewatis always remained a thorn in his/her eyes.

When the Mewatis looted the gold and silver loaded on camels

Faridabad, Gurugram, Mahendragarh of modern Haryana and Alwar districts of Rajasthan are called Mewat region. People living in this region are called Mevatis. During the Delhi Sultanate, these Mewatis showed rebellious attitude against the arbitrariness of the Sultans. The Mewatis had given sleepless nights to the Sultans of Delhi. According to Minhaj, a historian of the Sultanate period, as soon as the third Sultan of Delhi, Nasiruddin Mahmud, ascended the throne, the Mewatis revolted under the leadership of their leader Malwa. They attacked a commander of the Sultan near Hansi and looted the goods loaded on his/her camels.

According to historians, in January 1260 AD, when the Sultan got free from the attacks of the Mongols, he/she sent Ulug Khan i.e. Balban to teach a lesson to the rebel Mewatis. Balban laid siege to the Mewat region. he/she announced among the soldiers that whoever brings the head of a Mewati will get one silver coin. The one who brings him/her alive will be given two coins. After a 20-day battle, the Mewatis were defeated. 250 Mewatis were captured, who were crushed under the feet of elephants.

According to a historian Ziauddin Barani’s book Tarikh-e-Firozshahi, the Mewati chief Malka’s skin was peeled off, his/her skin was stuffed with straw and hung near the Delhi Gate. Barani says that he/she had never seen such a horrific scene in his/her life as he/she saw at the Delhi Gate Hauz-e-Rani. However, even after this the Mewatis remained rebellious.

When Balban assumed the title of Zille-Ilahi

Balban assumed the title of ‘Zille-Ilahi’ after suppressing the rebellion of the Mewatis and establishing peace in the Punjab region. To reduce the Turk influence, he/she made the practice of ‘Sijda’ (kneeling down and bowing one’s head in front of the emperor) and ‘Pabos’ (kissing the feet) based on Persian tradition compulsory. he/she forced the ministers, nobles and generals to stand in his/her court. No one could sit in front of him/her. Everyone used to stand in the court.

Dr. Daanpal says that as soon as he/she became the Sultan, Balban got the forests of Mewat cleared because the Mewatis used to hide in them after the war. Barani writes that after becoming the Sultan, Balban attacked Mewat and camped there. For a year, the Mewatis were hunted down and killed. It is said that the heads of the Mewatis were cut and placed on pillars from Delhi to Mewat. At the same time, the Mewatis also killed 1 lakh soldiers of Balban. However, the rebellion of the Mewatis did not stop even after this.

When he/she became a nuisance for Balban, he/she got a fort built

To establish permanent peace in Mewat, Balban built a fort in Gopalgir and stationed a small contingent of his/her troops there. Police stations were built at many places. Balban himself used to visit them. In the last days of Balban’s rule, the Mewatis again rebelled. An English historian Sir Woolzley Hague says that even after taking strict repressive measures, Balban could not completely pacify Mewat.

Firoz Tughlaq forced conversion, then the rebellion subsided to some extent

When Sultan Firoz Tughlaq took over the power of Delhi, during his/her reign also the Mewatis revolted under the leadership of their leader Samarpal. he/she was the landlord of Kotka. Firoz talked to him/her and made him/her accept Islam. Now he/she came to be known as Bahadur Nadir. The effect of Samarpal accepting Islam was that many Mewati people accepted Islam following the footsteps of their leader. Peace was established in other Mewat regions. After conversion, Bahadur Nadir made his/her place in the court of Delhi and started taking part in the politics there. In the era of the subsequent sultans too, sometimes politics and sometimes rebellious attitude were seen.

During the reign of Sikandar Lodi in the era of Delhi Sultanate, Alam Khan Mewati was an important nobleman in the court of Delhi. During the time of Ibrahim Lodi, Hasan Khan Mewati declared himself independent. he/she established a large state which included the areas around Mewat i.e. Gurugram, Faridabad, Narnaul and Alwar. he/she had an army of 10,000 Mewatis. On one hand, he/she maintained friendship with the Sultans of Delhi and on the other hand, he/she also maintained alliances with the Rajput chieftains of Rajasthan. Hasan Khan always remained loyal to the Delhi Sultanate. he/she even supported Ibrahim Lodi in the Battle of Panipat. However, Ibrahim Lodi lost this battle.
