Why did Shahrukh Khan and Leonardo DiCaprio’s film get shelved? The director revealed

Famous director Paul Schrader has revealed about his/her closed project ‘Extreme City’. This project was associated with Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan and Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio. It was conceived at the Berlin Film Festival in 2011, with Martin Scorsese attached as a producer. The reason why this project was stopped has now been revealed. Paul Schrader talked about this incomplete project in a podcast. he/she told that Shahrukh Khan, Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese had met in Berlin to discuss the film. Martin was to produce it, while Shahrukh had a key role in the script. However, Paul claimed that with time, Shahrukh’s enthusiasm for the project diminished and the planning came to a halt. Leonardo DiCaprio was also less interested in the secondary role.

Director Paul Schrader said, ‘Shah Rukh is the boss. They hire directors. Many times they hire multiple directors. For action, one director and someone else for musical numbers. Hire another director for scenes involving personal relationships. They can do that. he/she’d never really worked under a writer and I could see it was starting to bother him/her. he/she had never done a film in the West before and he/she had never been second fiddle to someone like Leo before.

The director came to Mumbai several times to meet Shahrukh

The story of ‘Extreme City’ revolves around Shahrukh’s character, who is a gangster. Who after saving the life of an American police officer in India, finds himself face to face with him/her, played by Leonardo. Paul said, ‘I wrote the script slowly. I went to Mumbai several times to meet him/her and spend time with him/her. I could feel that the ground beneath them was slowly slipping. his/her commitment was temporary. Then Leo’s commitment also became temporary. Which meant there was no commitment.

The idea was to cast Salman Khan

Paul also considered replacing Shahrukh with another Bollywood superstar Salman Khan. However, he/she decided not to do so and said, ‘If Shahrukh came to know about this, it would have been fatal for Shahrukh.’
