On the night of 26 December 2024, India lost one of its unique gems. When the incomparable economist Dr. Manmohan Singh, who was the Prime Minister of the country twice (2004-2014), breathed his/her last at the age of 92. The PM of India who was a bright star in the world of economics. Whose policies not only managed India’s wavering economy but also worked to strengthen it. The whole country is paying emotional tribute to him/her. 7 days state mourning has been declared. But have you ever wondered why Manmohan Singh chose the path of economics?

Coming from a very poor farmer family, Manmohan had his/her early education from a primary school in the same village. In 2004, when Manmohan Singh became the Prime Minister of India for the first time, during an interview with an American journalist, he/she came to know that even after 60 years, the school had preserved his/her academic records. Dr. Singh was quite surprised to hear this.

About 20 years ago, in the same interview given to American journalist Charlie Rose, Manmohan Singh had given the reason for choosing economics. he/she had said, ‘Ever since I was 15-16 years old, I used to be very confused after seeing the poverty around me. Read Minu Masani’s book ‘Our India’ in school. I remember the first sentence of that book was – ‘One out of every five people is an Indian. Yet India is a rich country where many poor people live.
Dr Singh had said, ‘I wanted to understand why India is such a poor country? Why is there so much poverty here? These curiosities attracted me towards the study of economics.

When Manmohan Singh was told in the interview that now that he/she has become the Prime Minister, he/she has the power to change history. In response to this, Dr. Singh said, ‘This is a big opportunity for the post. I have always believed that government office is a private education received at public expense.

On the basis of his/her merit, Manmohan Singh had studied from Britain’s top universities Oxford University and Cambridge University. But he/she said, ‘My family did not have enough money to send me to these places to study. It was only because of scholarship that I was able to reach here. But merit alone is not enough for this. I consider myself very lucky, because not everyone gets these opportunities.
