Why did India join in the criticism of Israeli attack on Gaza, the inside story


New Delhi : For the first time, India has strongly criticized Israel for its attacks in Gaza. Till now, no such statement had come directly from India. However, this issue was raised in the meeting of BRICS countries. In the joint statement issued after this meeting in Russia, BRICS foreign ministers raised questions about the Israeli action on Palestine. In the meeting, concern was expressed over the deterioration of the situation in the Palestinian region, especially the increase in violence in the Gaza Strip. As a result, the Israeli military operation led to large-scale displacement of civilians, many people were killed and the infrastructure was destroyed. This is a disregard for international laws.

The issue of Gaza Strip violence raised in BRICS

The BRICS countries expressed grave concern over the unprecedented escalation of violence in the Gaza Strip. India was represented at the meeting by Dammu Ravi, Secretary (Economic Relations), Ministry of External Affairs. In a joint statement after the meeting, the foreign ministers of the BRICS countries called for the effective implementation of UNGA resolutions and UNSC resolution 2720. They urged for immediate, safe and uninterrupted supply of large-scale humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian civilian population throughout the Gaza Strip. They also stressed the need for effective implementation of UN Security Council resolution 2728 for an immediate, durable and sustainable ceasefire.

What did the BRICS countries say in the statement

The BRICS also discussed Hamas’ actions, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all civilians held illegally. ET has reliably learnt that the presence of the three major Arab states UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt besides Iran in the BRICS ensured that the group strongly condemns Israel’s action in Gaza. Last year, the BRICS was expanded and now includes UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia and Iran.

India has already reacted to Israel’s action

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had earlier also reacted to Israel’s action. In a statement issued on May 30, India had said that the heartbreaking deaths in the displacement camps in Rafah are a matter of deep concern. India has always appealed for the protection of innocent civilians and respect for international humanitarian law. The Israeli side has already acknowledged it as a tragic incident and also announced an investigation into the incident.

Now the BRICS foreign ministers expressed grave concern over the increasing attacks by Israel on Rafah. They condemned the Israeli military operation in Rafah and its consequences, which directly affect the lives of ordinary people. They warned of the effects of escalation of tensions in the rest of the Middle East region. Accepted the measures of the International Court in the legal action initiated by South Africa against Israel. The ministers expressed grave concern over Israel’s continued blatant disregard for international law, the UN Charter, UN resolutions and court orders. The ministers reaffirmed their support for Palestine’s full membership in the UN and reiterated their unwavering commitment to the vision of a two-state solution based on international law. BRICS includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
