Why did Canada ask for visa and educational documents from Indian students? clarification given after the uproar

Study in Canada: Lakhs of Indians studying in Canada are very worried these days. The reason for this is a notification from the country’s ‘Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada’ (IRCC), in which students have been asked for their important documents like study permit, visa and educational records. Students have been asked to resubmit all their documents. As soon as the notification was received, there was panic among the Indian students and they became very worried.
The thing to note here is that these notifications were sent by the Government of Canada also to those students whose student visa is valid for more than two years. Due to this also the restlessness of the students has increased. At the same time, the immigration consultant present in Canada advised the students not to take the IRCC notification lightly and resubmit all the documents immediately. However, after the uproar, IRCC has now explained why it has asked Indian students to resubmit their documents.

Why were documents asked from Indian students?

According to the Business Standard report, IRCC has clarified that the notification sent regarding the documents is part of the standard procedure and not a new practice. IRCC added, “Since 2015, the Canadian government requires most ‘Designated Learning Institutions’ (DLIs) to report biannually on their admissions of foreign students in compliance with the International Student Compliance Regime.”

IRCC further explained that only a few DLIs are involved during regular compliance, in which students are not directly involved. However, in some cases students are asked to prove through documents whether they are studying in college or not. Same thing is happening this time. Let us tell you that DLIs are those universities which are allowed to give admission to foreign students in Canada.

Why were documents asked from Indian students only?

At the same time, when IRCC was asked why documents were asked from Indian students. In response, the department said, “India is the largest source of foreign students in Canada, hence Indian students have received a higher number of notifications.” 4.27 lakh Indian students are studying in Canada by August 2024. The largest group among foreign students is Indians.
