The court asked questions to the center
The bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuiyan also asked the Center to respond to the new petition filed by farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, in which the protesting farmers should not be given legal guarantee of MSP on crops in 2021 after the repeal of the agricultural laws. A request has been made to give instructions to the Central Government for the implementation of this.
Not asked to break Dallewal’s fast: SC
The Supreme Court has reprimanded the efforts made by the Punjab government in the treatment of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal. The court said that state government officials and some farmer leaders are spreading the false impression in the media that efforts are being made to break the fast of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal. A bench led by Justice Surya Kant made it clear that the court had never directed Dallewal to end his/her protest but was only concerned about his/her health condition. The court wants him/her to be given immediate medical help.
Justice Surya Kant said, ‘We do not want to say much, but it seems that Punjab government officials and some farmer leaders are making irresponsible statements in the media, which is further complicating the situation on the ground. We have to examine the intentions of some farmer leaders towards Dallewal.
Notice to Center on Dallewal’s application
Punjab Advocate General Gurminder Singh said that efforts were being made to convince Dallewal to seek medical help without breaking his/her fast. The Supreme Court said that the Chief Secretary and DGP of Punjab have appeared virtually in this case, it is hoped that the message of the court will reach the lower level. The next hearing of the case will be on January 6. The top court also issued notice to the Center on a fresh petition filed by Dallewal. The petition has sought directions to the central government to fulfill the promises, which include a legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) on crops to farmers after the agricultural laws are repealed in 2021.
