New Delhi : Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday referred to attacks on Hindus in India’s neighbourhood. Dhankhar questioned the silence of so-called moral preachers regarding attacks on Hindus. The Vice President said that they are mercenaries of something which is completely contrary to human rights. The Vice President said that we are very tolerant and it is not appropriate to be too tolerant towards such violations. Imagine if you were one of them.

Brutality against Hindus in Bangladesh

Without naming Bangladesh, the Vice President said look at the kind of brutality, torture and mental trauma that boys, girls and women are subjected to. he/she said that our religious places are being defiled. The Vice President’s comments were in the context of reports of widespread attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh since the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from office. At least 17 people have been arrested following ‘unpleasant incidents’ during Durga Puja celebrations in Bangladesh, according to a report.

Attempt to tarnish India’s image

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday said some malign forces were trying to project a “bad image” of India and called for a “counterattack” to neutralize such efforts. Dhankhar also said that India does not like to hear sermons or lectures on human rights from others.

‘Questions are being raised on our human rights record’

Addressing the Foundation Day function of the National Human Rights Commission here, he/she described Partition, imposition of Emergency and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots as painful events which “remind how fragile freedom is.” Dhankhar said that there are some harmful forces who want to tarnish us unfairly in a planned manner. he/she said these forces have an ‘evil intention’ to use international forums to ‘question our human rights record’.

Targeted on hunger index

he/she said that such forces need to be neutralized and in the Indian context he/she would use the word ‘counterattack’ for this. The Vice President said that these forces have prepared the index and are “ranking” everyone in the world to project a “bad image of our country”. he/she also hit out at the Hunger Index, in which India ranks poorly. he/she said that during the coronavirus pandemic, the government provided free ration to more than 80 crore people regardless of caste and creed.
