Why are Naidu, Stalin, these leaders of South India advocating for more children? What is in their mind?

New Delhi : A new debate has started due to the statements of top leaders regarding the sudden birth of more children in South India. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday said the Lok Sabha delimitation process could boost hopes of many couples to return to the Tamil proverb of 16 (kind of property) children. Stalin said that a situation has now arisen where people feel that now they should literally have 16 children and not have a small and happy family. Referring to the census and the Lok Sabha delimitation process, the Chief Minister said that newly married couples can now give up the idea of having fewer children.

Stalin joins Naidu’s tune

Stalin’s comments come a day after Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu made a similar statement on producing more children. Naidu on Sunday announced that his/her administration is planning to bring in a law under which only persons with two or more children will be able to contest local body elections. he/she had urged families to have more children, citing concerns about the state’s aging population and its impact on the demographic balance.

The parliamentary delimitation process may encourage couples to have more children and abandon the idea of small families. In the past, elders used to bless newly married couples to acquire 16 types of wealth and live a happy life. That blessing does not mean having 16 children…but now a situation has arisen where people feel that now they really should have 16 children.

South India’s population is aging

Chandrababu Naidu said that the population in South India is ageing. he/she said that every woman should give birth to more than two children in her lifetime. Andhra Pradesh’s birth rate is below replacement level at 2.1 live births per woman. Naidu said that we need to manage our population. he/she said that by 2047, we will have a demographic dividend, there will be more youth. After 2047, there will be more old people. In such a situation, if less than two children (per woman) are born, the population will reduce. If you (each woman) give birth to more than two children, the population will increase.

Reference to the population of Europe and Japan

According to Naidu, the state’s birth rate has fallen to 1.6. he/she feared that if the current situation continued, the birth rate could fall further to one or even less, where only old people would be seen in society. Citing Europe, Japan and other regions, he/she said that these countries are facing the problem of aging population, where the number of old people is increasing and the number of youth is decreasing. Naidu argued that South India was also facing a similar situation.

Limitation of number of children connection

In fact, the political reason behind the discussion of having more children in South India is no less important. The statement comes at a time when other southern states, including Tamil Nadu, are facing possible changes in parliamentary representation due to delimitation in 2026. Stalin is worried that the state’s share in the Lok Sabha may increase only marginally from 39 to 41 seats. Due to this, many people fear that the political voice in the central government will be reduced.

Under delimitation, the Parliament seats of our region (South India) will be reduced and they will be added to the northern states. Therefore, there is no time to recover from it. Therefore, when the population here increases, our seats will be with us.

Impact of parliamentary delimitation on South India

The process of delimitation of Lok Sabha seats is to start from the year 2026. In such a situation, the number of Lok Sabha seats may increase by 78 seats by the year 2029. In case of delimitation on the basis of population, there will be a direct impact on the seats in South India. This is because the population of South India is less than that of North India. In such a situation, the states of South India are already opposing delimitation on the basis of population. According to experts, based on population estimates by the year 2025, about 53 seats may increase in UP, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Haryana. At the same time, there will be only a slight increase in seats in South India.
