Why are Indians going to Georgia Meloni’s country through ‘Dinky Route’? Surprising reason revealed

Indians abroad: Going and working abroad is becoming so popular that people just want to leave the country by any means. Due to not getting jobs in India, people have started looking for jobs abroad. Skilled professionals are moving to countries like America, Britain, Canada in search of jobs. But it is becoming very difficult for unskilled people to get jobs abroad. Because of this, people have now started going abroad through the ‘donkey route’ by paying money to agents.
Till now it was seen that Indians used to enter countries like America illegally through ‘Donkey Route’, but now entry is being made in European countries also. Donkey route means a way to enter a country illegally with the help of agents. This word is very popular in states like Punjab-Haryana. Earlier, most of the people in America used to travel through the Donkey Route, but now Indians have started reaching Europe’s Italy also through this route.

Indian citizen dies in Italy

According to Reuters report, Satnam Singh, a resident of Chand Nawan village of Punjab, died in June this year in Agro Pontino, an area near Italy’s capital Rome. Satnam had gone to Italy illegally through the donkey route during Covid, where he/she used to work picking watermelons in the fields. his/her death due to amputation of his/her hand has sparked a discussion on the plight of 450,000 illegal immigrants in Italy. Italian farmers depend on illegal immigrants to plant and harvest crops.

Satnam Singh’s family had borrowed Rs 10 lakh and sent him/her to Italy. Satnam Singh’s hands and legs were cut off after being hit by a machine in the field. Eyewitnesses said that Satnam was left injured outside the house, while his/her severed body parts were kept in a fruit crate. Neighbors told RAI public television that her partner had pleaded with them to call an ambulance, but this was not done in time. he/she died 48 hours later in a hospital in Rome.

At present, a murder trial is going on against Antonello Lovato, son of Satnam’s employer. Lovato’s father said that we had warned Satnam not to go near the machines. Investigation has revealed that if Satnam had been taken to the emergency room, his/her life could have been saved. Lovato is accused of negligence after the accident and hiring an illegal immigrant. If found guilty, he/she could be sentenced to 21 years in prison.

Why are Indians going to Italy?

In fact, there is a demand for cheap laborers across Europe from Spain to Poland. The cost of production is increasing and local workers do not want to work for less money. Because of this, people in European countries have started becoming dependent on immigrant labourers. According to 2021 data from Istat, the national statistics office, about 11% of workers in Italy were working illegally. In the agriculture sector this number increased to more than 23%. However, Prime Minister Georgia Meloni has also tightened visa rules.

Human rights activists say the illegal ringleader system, known as ‘caporlato’, is at the forefront of exploiting immigrants. Through this system, people working as laborers in the fields are hired through middlemen. These middlemen are known as ‘caporali’. These middlemen take advantage of the irregularities in Italy’s seasonal working visa and invite people from countries like India to work.

First of all, migrants are made to work at low wages. Once the visa expires, they are considered to be in the country illegally. Because of this, people who went to Italy now start living in the country illegally. Indians are made to work at 4 to 5 euros per hour. People work for 10 hours each. People from India get a salary of 900 to 1000 Euro in Italy, which is 80 to 90 thousand in Indian Rupees.

Unemployment is very high in states like Punjab-Haryana. The biggest difficulties are for those who do not have skills. People working as agricultural laborers feel that their situation can improve if they work abroad. 80 to 90 thousand rupees is too much for these people, which can improve their financial condition. This is the reason why people are not shying away from going abroad even after taking loans worth lakhs of rupees.
