King’s minister Girdhar Das Bhandari reached Khejarli village with his/her army. This brave woman named Amrita Devi Bishnoi clung to a Khejri tree. Gradually the entire village came together to save the surrounding Khejri trees. Amrita Devi’s last words were, A chopped head is cheaper than a chopped tree. Amrita Devi’s three daughters also sacrificed their lives to save the tree. People from 84 villages gathered to save the trees. All these people stood holding the trees. The king’s men took turns killing about 363 people.

Maharaja issued notice that Khejri trees will not be cut.

When the news of this massacre reached the Maharaja, he/she immediately withdrew his/her order and asked the guards to return. After this the Maharaja issued an order in writing that the Khejri tree would never be cut in Marwar. This order has been followed till date. From then till today, a fair is organized in Khejarli village on Bhadwa Sudi Dasham as a sacrifice day.

How sacred is Khejri for Bishnoi community?

Kalpavriksha Khejri of the desert is also known as Shami tree. It is basically a tree found in the desert which is also found in the Thar Desert and other places. Shami tree is known in English as Prosopis cineraria. This tree has played an important role in maintaining greenery even in the desert. Sangri, the fruit grown on this tree, is used in making vegetables. Goats get food from its leaves. For this reason, Khejri is also considered the main source of income in rural areas.

The Bishnoi are a community found in the western Thar Desert and northern states of India. The main religious place of this community is Muqam, Bikaner. There is a story of two Bishnoi women named Karma and Gora in Ramsari village in the year 1604. It is said about them that both of them had sacrificed their lives to save the Khejri trees from being cut. One such story dates back to the year 1643, when a Bishnoi villager named Buchhoji committed suicide in protest against the cutting of Khejri trees for Holika Dahan.

In Bishnoi villages, deer are also seen along with Khejri trees. Bishnoi community also considers deer as sacred as Khejri. There is a belief among the people of Bishnoi community that they will take the form of a deer in the next life. It is also believed in the Bishnoi community that Guru Jambheshwar had told his/her followers to worship the black deer considering it to be his/her form. This is the reason why actor Salman Khan, who is involved in the blackbuck hunting case, is on the target of Lawrence Bishnoi. In fact, in 1998, during the shooting of the film ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’, the issue of hunting black buck came up. In which many names including Salman Khan, Tabu and others were revealed.
