Who was Justice HR Khanna?

Justice Hans Raj Khanna was born on July 3, 1912 in Punjab. he/she was educated at DAV High School, Amritsar. After this he/she studied from Hindu College, Amritsar and Khalsa College, Amritsar. he/she obtained his/her law degree from Law College, Lahore. Justice Khanna practiced in Amritsar till January, 1952.

he/she was appointed District and Sessions Judge of Firozpur. he/she was the District and Sessions Judge of Delhi in Delhi. After this, he/she became a judge in Punjab High Court in 1962. When Delhi High Court was formed, he/she became a judge here. In 1971, he/she was appointed judge of the Supreme Court. he/she retired on 12 March 1977.

Justice Khanna had given the verdict against the Indira Gandhi government regarding the Emergency. Justice Khanna is also known for his/her landmark judgment in the Habeas Corpus Case 1976. This case is considered a milestone in Indian judicial history.
