Aditi Singh, MLA from Sonia Gandhi’s stronghold Rae Bareli, has quit the Congress and joined the BJP. In the last six months, 10 big Congress leaders have left the party. Of these, six leaders have joined the Samajwadi Party, two have joined the BJP and two have joined the TMC.

Just before the assembly elections, several veteran leaders leaving the party one after the other is not a good message for the Congress. The question is also arising that after all, who is trying to weaken the Congress? Why Samajwadi Party and TMC, which once stood shoulder to shoulder, are breaking Congress leaders and getting them included in their party? Is this a political strategy to weaken Priyanka Gandhi? Read sequentially, which leaders of Uttar Pradesh have left the Congress within these six months and what do political experts think about Priyanka Gandhi’s leadership?
1. Jitin Prasad: Jitin Prasad, a close aide of Rahul Gandhi and a Union Minister of State in the Manmohan Singh government, first left the Congress. After joining BJP, Jitin is now a cabinet minister in the Yogi government of Uttar Pradesh. Jitin Prasada had said while leaving Congress, ‘I did not leave Congress because of any person or for any post. The reason I left the Congress was because there was a disconnect between the party and the people and this is the reason why the vote percentage of the party is decreasing in Uttar Pradesh. Apart from this, there is no plan to bring the party back on track.

2. Rajaram Pal : Recently, Congress’s National Secretary and former MP Rajaram Pal left the party and joined the Samajwadi Party. After this he said, ‘My blood is also dedicated to the Samajwadi Party. If my body is useful, I will use it to further SP’s Vijayarath.

3. Rajesh Pati Tripathi : Rajesh Pati Tripathi, son of former Chief Minister Pt. Kamalapati Tripathi and veteran Congress leader, has also left the party. Rajesh was also MLC from Congress. Rajesh husband is considered to have a good hold among the Brahmin voters of Purvanchal. Rajesh has joined the husband and Trinamool Congress.

4. Lalitesh Pati Tripathi: Lalitesh Pati Tripathi, a former Congress MLA from Mirzapur’s Madihan, also left the party along with his father Rajesh Pati Tripathi. Lalitesh has also joined the Trinamool Congress.

5. Harendra Malik: Harendra Malik, a former MP and member of the advisory committee to Priyanka Gandhi, has also left the Congress and became a socialist. Harendra is considered to have a good hold in western Uttar Pradesh.

6. Pankaj Malik: Pankaj Malik, son of former MLA and Harendra Malik, has also joined the Samajwadi Party. Pankaj has a good hold among the youth of western Uttar Pradesh.

7. Gayadeen Anuragi: Former MLA from Hamirpur Rath Gayadin Anuragi has also become a socialist. Gayadin had recently joined the party in the presence of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav. In 2012, Gayadin was elected MLA from Rath assembly constituency on a Congress ticket.

8. Vinod Chaturvedi: Vinod Chaturvedi, who was MLA from Orai of Jalaun, was also a member of Priyanka Gandhi’s advisory committee. He was considered a big face of Congress in Bundelkhand. Congress made him the district president of Congress thrice and once gave him the responsibility of the post of state vice-president of the party. Vinod has now joined the SP.

9. Manoj Tiwari : Manoj Tiwari, a veteran Congress leader in Mahoba, has also become a socialist. Manoj’s father Babulal Tiwari was a five-time Congress MLA.

10. Aditi Singh : Rae Bareli MLA Aditi Singh left the Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday. The separation of the big face of the Congress from the stronghold of Sonia Gandhi is a big setback. Senior journalist Pramod Kumar Singh, who has a good hold on UP politics, says, ‘Priyanka Gandhi strengthened the Congress in Uttar Pradesh on her own. His election promises are being discussed all over UP. Yes, it is a different matter that it will not have any special effect in the elections, but this is a good step for the future.

Pramod further says, ‘Priyanka is now openly taking decisions related to UP. Due to this the old and big leaders of the party have started feeling isolated. There is a stir inside the party. In such a situation, many leaders have themselves started trying to weaken the Congress. This is because if the party becomes strong at this time, then only and only Priyanka Gandhi will get the credit for it. At the same time, if Congress loses badly, then Priyanka Gandhi’s political career will suffer a lot.
